Controls Design Engineer

S & W Controls, Inc., a family-owned HVAC controls, building automation, and energy management contractor serving the Washington, DC area, seeks an on-site Controls Design Engineer for its Upper Marlboro, MD office. This office-based role centers on designing building automation solutions, including mechanical and electrical layouts, sequences of operation, and network architecture. A background check and a valid driver’s license are required, with a competitive benefits package and salary ranging from $60,000 to $110,000 per year.

Responsibilities

• Choose the most cost-effective mix of products and installation methods to meet project requirements.
• Leverage strong technical knowledge of building systems to develop robust designs.
• Develop designs that include mechanical layouts, electrical drawings, bill of materials, sequences of operations, valve and damper schedules, and DDC panel layouts to satisfy project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Prepare all required submittals and schedules for customer approval prior to construction.
• Write, edit, and clarify equipment sequences of operation for efficient control programming.
• Design building automation network architecture to connect DDC equipment via BACnet or other third-party protocols.
• Analyze plans, contract specs, building conditions, and codes to determine project requirements and risks.
• Serve as a technical resource to the team and customers as needed.
• May participate in initial job-site walk-throughs with contractors and/or building management.
• Assist in engineering re-estimates and coordinate with the project manager to ensure understanding of and alignment with the job scope.
• Assist in preparing information on pre-installation extras or change orders for submission to the project manager.
• Author and track RFIs.
• Maintain an organized job folder with all pertinent project information.

Requirements

• Degree in electronics, mechanical, or another technical field, or equivalent experience.
• Solid knowledge of engineering fundamentals within the industry and business operations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience with AutoCAD.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Fully proficient and independently capable in design tasks.
