Controls Engineer Department Head
Job Description
The Controls Engineer Department Head leads end-to-end controls design, PLC and HMI programming, testing, and the customer-facing scope within Rhino Pumps' controls and electrical shop.
Responsibilities
- For every controls project, assemble and approve the design package, including a functional description, bill of materials, panel layout drawing, and I/O list before initiating builds.
- Develop PLC and HMI programs, adapting across platforms and manufacturers according to project requirements.
- Select, size, and configure variable frequency drives to meet application needs.
- Review panel builds against drawings, resolve discrepancies, and sign off readiness for factory acceptance testing.
- Create FAT procedures, oversee tests, and document results.
- Define standard controls scope including surge protection, line reactors, a control power transformer, pressure transducers, HOA on the HMI, lead/lag sequencing, runtime meters, fault history, and Modbus RTU with a register map for customer integration.
- Lead customer conversations on controls scope during pre-sales and project execution to clarify technical requirements.
- Prepare controls estimates by accurately scoping labor and materials, building BOMs from standard configurations, and supporting the estimating process.
- Deliver complete documentation packages including drawings, wiring schematics, register maps, O&M materials, and startup records.
- Establish and enforce department standards for drawings templates, programming conventions, documentation practices, and review workflows.
- Oversee and develop controls department personnel.
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of hands-on controls engineering experience in industrial, municipal, or process pump applications.
- PLC programming experience on at least one major platform (Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, Automation Direct, or equivalent), with the ability to adapt across manufacturers.
- VFD application experience across common industrial platforms, including selection, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of UL 508A panel standards and NEC electrical requirements.
- Ability to produce and read electrical drawings such as panel layouts, single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and I/O lists.
- Experience scoping controls work, building BOMs, and supporting project estimates.
- Comfortable leading customer conversations on controls scope and technical aspects.
- Education: Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent field experience.

The Role
The Controls and Electrical shop at Rhino Pumps has established a solid panel build operation with strong people and processes. The engineering and programming depth is the next area of growth, and this role leads that advancement. The Controls Engineer will own the design package from concept through commissioning, covering functional descriptions, BOMs, panel layout drawings, I/O lists, PLC programming, and customer-facing technical scope. As the senior controls voice at Rhino Pumps, you will collaborate with project managers, the panel build team, and customers from estimate through commissioning.
Nice to Have
- Experience with pump systems, skid packages, or water and wastewater applications
- Experience with Modbus RTU mapping for third-party integration into customer BAS or SCADA systems
- Familiarity with UL 508A shop certification processes
- Field commissioning experience paired with shop-side design work

Compensation
Salary: USD 95,000 - 125,000 per year
