Cybersecurity Engineer SME
Job Description
This role centers on guiding the defense program's cybersecurity across the enterprise in Oahu, Hawaii. The Senior Cybersecurity Engineer SME leads architecture, RMF compliance, and incident response while directing long-term security modernization, and provides executive briefings along with mentoring staff.

Responsibilities
- Develop and execute an enterprise cybersecurity strategy aligned with DoW directives and mission objectives.
- Lead cybersecurity architecture reviews and authorize technical security designs.
- Establish and enforce security baselines across systems and networks.
- Drive long-term modernization initiatives to strengthen security posture and resilience.
- Lead RMF activities, including system categorization, control implementation, assessment support, and ATO package development.
- Ensure compliance with DoW cybersecurity directives and DISA STIG requirements.
- Perform risk assessments and formulate mitigation strategies.
- Support cybersecurity inspections, audits, and continuous monitoring efforts.
- Oversee cybersecurity operations, including monitoring, detection, and response.
- Lead incident response for cyber events impacting mission systems and conduct root cause analysis with remediation actions.
- Develop and maintain incident response plans and playbooks.
- Architect and secure enterprise environments covering network security (firewalls, IDS/IPS, segmentation), endpoint security (EDR/XDR), IAM, cloud security (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government), and data protection with encryption.
- Incorporate Zero Trust principles where applicable.
- Ensure secure configuration management and timely vulnerability remediation.
- Develop cybersecurity policies, standards, and standard operating procedures.
- Provide executive-level briefings on cybersecurity posture, risks, and mitigation strategies.
- Maintain accurate security documentation and reporting metrics.
- Provide technical oversight to cybersecurity engineers and analysts.
- Mentor junior staff and promote cybersecurity best practices across the program.
- Collaborate with network, systems, cloud, and application teams to ensure secure integration of systems.
Requirements
- Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive cybersecurity experience.
- Proven experience supporting DoW or federal IT environments.
- Experience with RMF, continuous monitoring, and vulnerability management.
- Background in network and endpoint security technologies, secure system architecture, and incident response methodologies.
- Experience supporting classified network environments (such as SIPR or JWICS) or equivalent.

Salary and Benefits Information
The expected salary range for this position is USD 169,604 to USD 229,464 per year. This range is not a guaranteed offer and final compensation will be determined by experience, geographic location, and contractual requirements.
