Data Engineer I (AWS, Python, SQL)
Job Description
Travelers is expanding its data engineering capability to modernize pricing data platforms for CMP and Specialty segments. This on site role in Hartford, CT centers on building scalable data pipelines and applying MLOps practices to model development and deployment on AWS, all while collaborating with Actuarial and Data Science teams to support pricing insights.
Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain data pipelines for CMP and Specialty pricing to ensure reliability and scalability in production environments.
- Handle data preparation tasks including exploration, cleansing, and transformation while aligning with enterprise architecture, platforms, and downstream consumption patterns.
- Translate actuarial and data science requirements into scalable, production-ready data solutions with guidance from senior engineers.
- Support data quality controls, profiling, and monitoring across the model development lifecycle.
- Assist in implementing CMP and Specialty pricing models in partnership with Data Science and Actuarial teams.
- Adopt and apply MLOps practices throughout the model development and deployment lifecycle.
- Develop knowledge of CMP and Specialty data over time, becoming a subject matter resource for benchmarks, modernization initiatives, and future enhancements.
- Contribute to project planning and execution across CMP and Specialty data engineering initiatives.
- Present analyses and provide technical recommendations to support data implementation decisions.
- Participate in code reviews and design discussions, helping establish team standards and best practices.
- Contribute to platform modernization efforts by migrating legacy processes to cloud native architectures on AWS.
- Apply agile methodologies to plan, prioritize, and deliver work across concurrent initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent; related backgrounds include computer science or other STEM disciplines.
- Six years of related experience; an additional two years of software or data engineering experience is noted.
- Proficiency with cloud platforms, programming languages, and standard software engineering practices.
- Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace and decompose tasks into small releases, contributing to tradeoff discussions.
- Demonstrated domain expertise with the ability to understand technical concepts and the systems involved.
- Strong problem solving and debugging skills to identify issues in unfamiliar code or systems and resolve repetitive problems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication for collaboration with team members and business partners.
- Intermediate leadership skills with self motivation for personal growth.
- 2 additional years of software or data engineering experience may be considered.
