Job Description

The Data Engineer II role in Culver City, CA (hybrid) at Sony Pictures Entertainment focuses on building and maintaining ELT pipelines that power analytics, reporting, and AI/ML applications within the Insights, Strategy and Analytics team, collaborating with stakeholders across production, distribution, and marketing.

Responsibilities

  • Data Ingestion and Platform Development: Support the ingestion of new sources into SPE's Snowflake data platform, collaborating with central IT and cloud operations teams to define ingestion requirements and verify that pipelines align with business needs.
  • Analytics Modeling: Translate complex business use cases into robust data models using dbt and SQL, applying analytics engineering best practices to ensure maintainability, reliability, and performance.
  • Agile Product Delivery: Participate in fast-moving project teams building new ISA tools; source and harmonize data from disparate systems to create consumption-ready datasets used by data scientists and data visualization leads, delivering measurable business impact in an agile environment.
  • Data Governance and Compliance: Ensure data quality, integrity, and security across data platforms and pipelines; collaborate with IT, engineering, and information security teams on governance and compliance initiatives.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Translate business requirements for non-technical stakeholders and partner with technical teams across multiple disciplines to craft effective solutions.
  • Team Culture and Collaboration: Foster a high-performing team environment through open collaboration and a shared culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, or related fields; advanced degrees are a plus.
  • At least five years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a related technical role within production environments.
  • Proven ability to handle complex data domains and organize data assets for analytical use.
  • Interest in business concepts, entities, and relationships relevant to television production and distribution is a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python.
  • Experience building dbt transformation pipelines is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with modern cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, GCP/BigQuery, or AWS/Redshift, along with pipeline orchestration tools.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, version control, and automated testing frameworks to enforce data quality.
  • Exposure to generative AI technologies and interest in AI driven approaches to data engineering and analytics workflows.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a natural curiosity to understand the business systems and processes that generate data.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail.
