Job Description

Join Hargrove and Associates, Inc in Pasadena, TX as an Electrical Engineer supporting complete design work for complex electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments. In this onsite role, you will apply advanced techniques and analysis under general supervision while coordinating across disciplines and contributing to field and startup support from the Pasadena office.

Role overview

  • Perform all aspects of complete design for complex electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments.
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis with extensive progressive experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
  • Work under general supervision, including design, calculations, specifications, and review/checking.
  • Use and apply department design and drafting standards, along with project scope, specifications, and design criteria assigned to a project task team.
  • Recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
  • Provide on-site assistance during startup and perform fieldwork to gather field data and check tie-ins as needed.
  • Support department delivery by furnishing sufficient sketches and details required to complete engineering drawings.

Design, documentation, and coordination

  • Produce estimate-level designs and material take-offs aligned to the project’s estimate scope.
  • Create detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction associated with the project.
  • Ensure calculations are neatly prepared and organized for efficient checking and for use by drafters and designers.
  • Develop electrical installation specifications and construction specifications, and assist with construction submittal reviews.
  • Produce and/or develop installation deliverables including motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, and grounding, plus lighting, power, and instrumentation plans.
  • Create conceptual layouts and cost studies to help determine the simplest and most efficient engineering approach.
  • Check other engineers’ calculations for accuracy, code and specification conformance, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
  • Assist the drafting group by resolving routine layout and detailing problems.
  • Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth flow of vital information to support scheduled project completion.
  • Advise the senior engineer on identified design or scope changes.
  • Assist with assembling engineering packages to support electrical/instrumentation purchase inquiries for procurement and subcontract pricing.
  • Review and check vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for electrical/instrumentation input; review fabrication drawings and construction submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.

Discipline leadership and planning

  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
  • Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
  • Act as a discipline lead on small to mid-sized projects.
  • Estimate and schedule professional service hours and assess progress and quality of electrical/instrumentation work.
  • Provide leadership to ensure execution within scope, schedule, and budget, including virtual team skills and cross divisional relationships.
  • Develop work sharing packages for interoffice execution support.

Core technical skills and tools

  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Perform lighting level calculations; size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power; perform voltage drop calculations.
  • Route conduit and cable tray, calculate tray and conduit fill, and determine motor control center loading.
  • Create electrical installation documents using information found on vendor equipment drawings.
  • Determine load center unit substation loading; develop equipment specifications for motor control centers, variable frequency drives, induction and synchronous motors, and load center unit substations.
  • Ability to produce a 15kV power system single line diagram, including familiarity with 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques above and below ground.
  • Develop specifications for 15kV/5kV equipment such as switchgear, load break switches, motor control centers, including calculations for required short circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings.
  • Contribute to P&IDs for measurement and control; develop control narratives; specify process instrumentation and installation details.
  • Size control valves using appropriate software, and develop specifications and data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, and actuated valves.
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable instrumentation and controls standards (ISA).
  • Programming experience with Programmable Logic controller (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI), and/or Distributed Control System (DCS) equipment.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software, either AutoCAD, Microstation, or both.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ability to act as discipline engineer of record for projects requiring professional engineering certification.
  • Comfort with physical activity required for the role, including the ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 6 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
  • Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
