Job Description
Join Tesla’s Plant Operations team in Fremont, CA (onsite) as an Electrical Engineer focused on reliable utility performance across multiple vehicle manufacturing sites in the Fremont/Bay area. This role acts as the electrical subject matter expert for plant utilities, owning critical equipment and helping ensure electrical systems are designed, maintained, and operated with safety and operational readiness in mind. You will work hands-on in the field, collaborate across engineering groups, and support start-up, commissioning, and continuous improvement efforts.
Compensation: $109,600 - $195,600 per year + cash and stock awards and benefits. Pay may vary based on market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the system owner for electrical equipment and material specification.
- Continuously monitor site conditions through field walks and data acquisition systems.
- Review design and vendor documentation; evaluate risks, constructability, and potential operational challenges.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute complex maintenance shutdowns within fixed schedules.
- Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis across low, medium, and high voltage systems.
- Create sequenced switching orders and diagrams for electrical equipment.
- Support continuous improvement activities with key stakeholders and engineering groups.
- Participate in start-up and commissioning activities by addressing open issues and punch-list items with timely coordination across teams.
- Contribute to Tesla specification and standard creation.
- Establish test plans and control test plan execution at vendors and during installation and buy-off at the Tesla facility.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in the industrial/utility sector as a hands-on electrical field engineer or electrical applications engineer working on power system design, construction, commissioning, maintenance, and operation.
- Proficiency in electrical protection systems.
- Ability to create detailed preventive maintenance plans for switchyards, unit substations, backup power systems, and electrical busway distribution, including oversight of execution.
- Ability to size electrical systems including unit substations, transformers, busway distribution, UPS, and generators.
- Strong working knowledge of local and national technical and safety standards and codes: NEC, NETA, NFPA, OSHA, with deep understanding of NFPA 70E and NETA ECS regarding shock and arc flash safety.
- Experience partnering with procurement and vendors to identify delivery gaps, ensure complete equipment handover, and run regular vendor meetings during procurement and fabrication.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including executive-level communication.
- Ability to collaborate efficiently with engineers and technicians across disciplines, plus vendors and contractors.
- Experience with utility-level distribution across commercial to industrial transmission-level customers.
