Job Description

Duke Energy is hiring an Engineer I or Engineer II to provide engineering/technical expertise and support studies, documentation, and team planning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and technical expertise and guidance to identify, analyze, and resolve problems of increasing scope and complexity
  • Support team decision-making aligned to business goals through planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities
  • Adapt to changing priorities and differing situations and make decisions that can affect team work
  • Prepare thorough, accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches for well-defined problems and analyses
  • Conduct engineering and related studies
  • Complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight, with increasing ability to manage project schedules and interfaces
  • Increase competency to design, operate, and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems
  • Apply fundamental engineering concepts, practices, and procedures and strengthen technical and analytical competencies
  • Develop positive working relationships to coordinate work activities
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Support company goals and represent Duke Energy positively and professionally

Requirements

  • Graduate from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • A master’s degree in engineering may be considered in lieu of the B.S. in Engineering degree
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant engineering experience

Basic Requirements by Level

  • Engineer I: B.S. in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, and/or a master’s in engineering in lieu of the B.S.
  • Engineer II: B.S. (ABET-accredited) and/or master’s in engineering in lieu of the B.S., plus minimum 2 years of relevant engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Increasing proficiency in principles of project management
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Department-specific experience applicable to the hiring department
  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles
  • Increasing proficiency in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Good written and oral communication skills

Working Conditions and Travel

  • Location: Durham, NC (hybrid)
  • Working model: Hybrid Mobility Classification
  • Site access: Some business units may require visits to field sites and/or plants
  • Travel: 15-25%

Additional Notes

  • This position may be filled as Engineer I or one level higher as Engineer II, depending on the selected candidate’s experience
