Job Description

We are seeking an Engineer I to coordinate outages for the Southwest Power Pool in Little Rock, Arkansas. This role supports reliable real-time system operations by developing forward-looking power flow models, assessing SOL and IROL exceedances, and coordinating outages and operating plans across the grid.

Responsibilities

  • Develop forward-looking power flow models that incorporate projected generation, network topology, and load patterns for the study horizon.
  • Analyze the models to identify potential SOL or IROL exceedances.
  • Craft Operating Plans to mitigate exceedances, which may involve market flow gates, operating guides, rescheduling or denying planned outages, or other appropriate actions.
  • Communicate Operating Plans to Reliability Coordinators, Shift Engineers, and affected entities.
  • Approve planned outages that can be executed without compromising the integrity of the Bulk Electric System.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for the assigned area and tools.
  • Develop or maintain process documents related to required tasks.
  • Provide on-call support on a rotating basis.
  • Ensure compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures, NERC standards, and FERC requirements.
  • Undertake projects as assigned, typically focusing on process improvements, data collection, or stakeholder relations.
  • Provide on-the-job training for newer staff members.
  • Complete studies and project work under the direction of more senior staff members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university, in a calculus-based engineering field such as Electrical, Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.

Compensation Information

The salary range listed is a good faith estimate for the role at this time and may be adjusted in an offer based on qualifications, skills, experience, and location.

Engineer I - Outage Coordination: Salary range USD 70,320 – 87,895 per year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Emphasis on power system analysis and electric utility operations is preferred.
  • Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam, PE licensure, or NERC certification.

Other Requirements

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities.
  • Understanding of and adherence to SPP Policies and Procedures.

Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time role with flexible hours and on-call duties every 8 to 12 weeks.

Travel Requirement

Minimal travel required, up to 20 percent.
