Job Description

This onsite role in Salt Lake City, UT sits within Power Delivery and includes eligibility for an annual discretionary performance incentive bonus of up to 15.00% of salary.

The position supports advanced planning and design efforts across utility generation and transmission needs, with Principal Engineer-level technical leadership for highly complex power line and foundation design research.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, modify, and evaluate complex systems, processes, or facilities using engineering methods for power line design to meet company objectives.
  • Create highly complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments for power line design.
  • Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results, and serve as a lead or expert within the work group.
  • Train and mentor associate and career-level engineers, technicians, and drafters.
  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management aligned with business needs.
  • Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to complete assigned work.
  • Maintain project timelines and budgets.
  • Analyze and design power line engineering methods, including wood, fiberglass, and steel structures; conductor types; insulators; shield wire; optical overhead ground wire; guy wire; anchors; connection hardware; and structural supports such as braces and steel or wood crossarms.
  • Analyze and design foundation engineering methods including helical piers, helical piles, concrete drilled piers, and grillage foundations.
  • Independently conduct highly complex engineering research studies and technical analyses in specialized power line and foundation design areas not commonly available in the market.
  • Provide technical expertise for critical plant and facility components related to power line design.
  • Develop detailed design specifications and prepare bid packages for external engineering services and similar contracts.
  • Review and evaluate system and equipment performance, tests, and analyses prepared by senior engineering staff.
  • Participate in government, industry, collegiate, and other applicable work groups that can influence or set policy impacting utility operations.
  • Analyze and design engineering methods for lattice tower and foundations used in power line design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil/structural, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, including highly technical, specialized work in power line and foundation design.
  • Minimum of six (6) or more years experience in industrial power line systems or electric utility power line systems and design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of principles in power line and foundation design.
  • Project management and leadership skills, including teamwork and the ability to maintain timelines, budgets, and commitments.
  • Understanding of the company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations, and the National Electric Code.
  • Knowledge of applicable IEEE, ACSE, and ACI code requirements.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while remaining focused and calm.
  • Highest level communication and interpersonal skills, including cross-functional collaboration to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommend solutions.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and automated tools.
  • Proficiency with PLSCADD, LPile, MFAD, and TFAD.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team to deliver commitments within constrained timelines.
  • PE license preferred in at least one of: Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, California, or ability to obtain a license in Utah.
