Firmware Software Engineer
Job Description
Optical Zonu Corp. designs RF-over-fiber telecommunications solutions, and this role centers on building and sustaining embedded firmware for those products. The position is onsite in Van Nuys, CA, requiring close collaboration with hardware, software, and production teams to design, develop, and maintain firmware through its lifecycle. The compensation range for this role is USD 100,000 - 160,000 per year, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related discipline is required.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, and maintain embedded firmware primarily in C
- Provide continuation engineering for existing products, addressing troubleshooting, feature enhancements, defect resolution, and lifecycle support
- Investigate, debug, and resolve firmware, software, and system integration issues using appropriate tools and methodologies
- Develop supporting tools, test applications, and manufacturing utilities in Python
- Support manufacturing and production teams by developing and maintaining test platforms, diagnostic tools, and production software
- Contribute to architecture and software design discussions to promote maintainability, modularity, and reliability
- Engage in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, improve code quality, and elevate engineering practices
- Produce clear documentation, test and validation procedures, and technical design information for firmware and software tools
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline
- Strong proficiency in the C programming language
- Extensive experience developing software for microcontrollers, embedded hardware, and PC applications
- Understanding of abstraction, decoupling, and cohesion
- Knowledge of design patterns and software structures
- Familiarity with UML and software documentation practices
- Ability to optimize software for microcontrollers
- Experience debugging complex software and firmware systems
- Capability to refactor legacy systems while preserving functionality and reliability
- Ability to understand electronic schematics and fundamentals
- Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters
- Commitment to writing clean, readable, well-documented code
- Strong written communication skills and a commitment to producing well-documented, supportable deliverables
- Ability and adaptability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment
