General Engineer
Job Description
Exelon’s utility engineering team is seeking a General Engineer to lead and support engineering work across electric or gas infrastructure. In this hybrid role based out of the Kennett Square, PA office, you will help develop engineering solutions, manage technical deliverables, and ensure projects meet internal and regulatory expectations.
Role overview
As a General Engineer, you will work across utility infrastructure areas including electric or gas distribution, transmission, substations, and related systems. The position focuses on performance evaluation, outage analysis, technical problem solving, cross-functional coordination, and compliance with accepted standards, guides, and codes.
Responsibilities
- Lead electric, gas, and/or communications system performance evaluations and perform outage analysis
- Drive initiatives that improve safety, reliability, and operational efficiency
- Manage budgeting and cost estimation for engineering projects
- Coordinate across departments and with external stakeholders
- Oversee field inspections and resolve technical issues
- May require extended hours for storm coverage or other energy delivery emergencies
- Complete engineering assignments of moderate complexity using independent judgment under guidance from experienced engineers, including data collection and analysis, result interpretation, conclusion development, and recommendations to management
- Lead small engineering projects or tasks in coordination with cross-functional teams, including analysis of power flow results, engineering tests, and resolution of ambiguous findings
- Provide technical support and consultation for engineering and operating groups to assist with design, installation, and maintenance, including validating studies, blueprints, and designs against accepted engineering principles and practices
- Participate in evaluating and improving technical systems and processes, supporting project planning and implementation, and may assign and review work
Required qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a Licensed Professional Engineer credential
- 4-7 years of professional engineering experience (with experience reduction considerations noted below)
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems
- Knowledge and ability to apply problem-solving approaches and engineering theory
- Knowledge of engineering designs, principles, and practices
- Knowledge of complex field test equipment
- Broad knowledge of regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles needed to perform very complex or unique assignments for a specific area
- Minimum of two related career experiences (defined as changes in technical job responsibilities, which may or may not include a change in department) OR Engineer in Training (EIT) OR 50% completion (by hours) with an advanced technical degree, M.B.A., or Project Management Certification
Preferred qualifications
- Graduate degree or graduate-level work in Engineering, Business Administration, or Project Management Certification
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and/or Professional Engineer license
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with all management levels
- Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills, including report generation and technical writing
- Working knowledge of analysis software packages such as CYMDIST, PSS&E, Python, PLS-CAD, Pole Foreman, Power BI, or similar tools

Compensation and benefits
- Salary range: $92,000 - $126,500 per year (varies by skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors)

Work setup and location
- Location: Kennett Square, PA (hybrid)
- Hybrid requirement: employees must be in the office at least three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday)
- Must sit out of the Kennett Square, PA office
Experience reduction notes
- Master’s degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year
- License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing
- Professional Engineer (PE) license reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year
- If both a master’s degree in Engineering and a PE license apply, the maximum experience reduction is one (1) year
