Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Determine healthcare project requirements for the entire Healthcare System, including parent and off-site locations, whether VA-owned or leased.
  • Define organizational project needs at the department level using guidelines, standards, regulatory requirements, and mission priorities.
  • Conduct broad engineering reviews across disciplines to support construction document reviews and preparation in a healthcare environment.
  • Apply knowledge of The Joint Commission requirements, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 99 Healthcare Facilities Code, and VA design standards to direct architectural/engineering firms toward compliant designs.
  • Utilize established methods, precedents, and standards to tackle diverse and complex project workloads.
  • Exercise independent engineering judgment in scheduling, layout, inspection, and surveillance of materials, methods, and equipment used in construction.
  • Manage shifting priorities and deadlines driven by engineering workload.
  • Train facility maintenance staff on new equipment and complex utility systems to ensure proper operation and upkeep.
  • Provide direction to contractors and approve means and methods to minimize impact on patient care during construction within a medical setting.
  • Offer contractor training to align work with medical facility requirements and confinements for safer, compliant execution.
  • Assist on medical center construction projects, space functional changes, and planning related to medical technologies and equipment.
  • Provide project management for planning, design reviews, construction, and equipment installation for facilities such as cardiac cath labs, operating rooms, pharmacy suites, sterile processing, radiology, and computer systems.
  • Monitor and report on construction and utilities management programs to meet accrediting standards like TJC; stay current with standards interpretation and reporting objectives.
  • Help ensure information security for engineering databases and building automation systems.
  • Occasional travel as required.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background and security investigations.
  • Must complete online onboarding and provide acceptable identification for pre-employment requirements; effective May 7, 2025, REAL ID compliant identification is required.
  • Current, valid state-issued driver’s license required; must pass a pre-employment driving physical exam.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for VA Health Care Personnel.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Architecture; Experience: minimum 1 year.
  • Must serve a 1- or 2-year trial period as a condition of employment.

Benefits

  • Pay: USD 99,402 - 129,225 per year, with regular salary increases
  • Paid Time Off: 37-50 days per year (13-26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays)
