Industrial Automation Controls Engineer

The Industrial Automation Controls Engineer at Engineered Vision programs and deploys PLC, HMI, and motion/servo-based automation systems for customer facilities. The role combines desk-based development with shop builds and field commissioning, with limited regional travel near Columbus, Ohio. U.S. citizenship is required for government project work.

Key Responsibilities

• Program PLCs and HMIs using platforms including Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, and Automation Direct.
• Program motion control and servo systems using Kinetix, IAI, and Festo technologies.
• Develop controls for mechanical automation equipment, including industrial and collaborative robots using FANUC, Epson, and Universal Robots.
• Support machine vision integration using Keyence and Cognex systems.
• Deploy controls at customer sites, including service support and commissioning activities.
• Travel up to 15%, primarily within 250 miles of Columbus, Ohio.

Required Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship (required for government project work; green card holders are not eligible for these contracts).
• Based in, or willing to relocate to, the Columbus, Ohio area.
• Minimum 2 years of experience with a custom machine builder, or equivalent automation experience.
• Demonstrated ability to program and commission PLCs, HMIs, and motion controllers on real equipment.
• Experience with robot, motion, and vision programming.
• Experience designing, building, and testing analog and digital circuits.
• Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in controls, automation, electrical, mechatronics, or a related field.

Technology Exposure

The role involves work across PLC and HMI platforms, motion control, servo systems, robotics, and machine vision. Systems may include PLC, HMI, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Automation Direct, motion controls, servo systems, Kinetix, IAI, Festo, FANUC, Epson, Universal Robots, machine vision, Keyence, Cognex, analog and digital circuits, robots, and SCADA tools such as Ignition (SCADA).

Work Style and Time Allocation

Work is divided across multiple environments, typically including approximately 70% desk, 20% shop, and 10% field time.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on programming experience with one or more core platforms: FANUC or Epson robots, Keyence vision, or Allen-Bradley PLCs.
• B.S. in Mechatronics, Electrical, Robotics/Automation, or a related engineering field.
• 4+ years of experience with a custom machine builder.
• Customer run-off and issue troubleshooting experience.
• Ignition (SCADA) experience.
• Machine vision lighting and lensing setup experience.
