Instrument and Controls Engineer
Job Description
The Instrument and Controls Engineer role supports detailed I&C design activities for offshore and onshore oil and gas projects, providing supervision-assisted deliverables and instrumentation drawings from a Houston, TX onsite base.
Responsibilities
- Under supervision, prepare Instrument Datasheets, Instrument Indexes, I/O Lists, and Cable Schedules.
- Perform PSV sizing and relief calculations as part of the safety analysis.
- Redline and update control panel drawings to reflect project changes.
- With guidance from senior engineers, assist in sizing calculations for Control Valves, Relief Valves, and Orifice Meters.
- Specify common instrumentation including Pressure, Temperature, Flow, and Level transmitters and gauges in line with project standards.
- Review P&IDs from an instrumentation and controls perspective under senior engineer oversight and provide input as appropriate.
- Collaborate with a senior engineer and the design/drafting team to produce Instrument Wiring Diagrams, Instrument Installation Details, Junction Box and PLC Panel Layout Drawings, and B.O.M.
- Review vendor submittals and packages under supervision to verify compliance with project requirements.
- Assist with Technical Bid Evaluations when required and aligned with experience level.
- Identify potential out-of-scope activities and coordinate with senior engineers or management before proceeding.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program.
- 5–10 years of related Instrumentation and Controls experience (internship or co-op experience acceptable).
- Basic familiarity with control valve and relief valve sizing concepts; experience with vendor software is a plus.
- Exposure to tools such as Fisher Valve Specification Manager, Emerson PRV2Size, or FE-Sizer is preferred but not required.
- EIT is preferred but not required.
- Ability and willingness to complete Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training as required by project or client needs.
- Familiarity with relevant industry codes, standards, and engineering practices.
- Familiarity with common instrumentation vendors such as Rosemount, Fisher, Kimray, Norriseal, Anderson Greenwood, Wika, Ashcroft, and Enardo is a plus.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, good organizational abilities, flexibility, and interpersonal skills.
- Basic awareness of industry standards such as API 520, API 521, API 12F, API 2000, and AGA No. 3.
