Job Description

This on-site position supports major utility and energy clients, leading transmission line design efforts and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The role is based at client sites in Rochester, Buffalo, or Binghamton, New York.

Responsibilities

  • Review and design transmission line plans and profiles with PLS-CADD to ensure compliance with Client Standards and the NESC and other applicable standards.
  • Provide structure recommendations and conduct insulation, AC interference, static wire, and grounding studies.
  • Create line design artifacts including plans, profiles, and cross-section details.
  • Assist in leading the overall transmission line design for capital projects.
  • Lead project planning for routing and strategy, including decisions on rebuilding existing lines versus obtaining additional right-of-way based on area congestion and permitting considerations.
  • Determine appropriate structure designs based on design constraints and optimize routing near congested stations to enhance reliability and minimize crossings.
  • Serve as an overhead transmission line design technical specialist, offering consultation and guidance to project teams.
  • Develop technical specifications, QA/QC procedures, deliverable templates, and other means to improve day-to-day efficiency.
  • Review construction design documents such as plan and profiles, structure load trees, structure framing, bill of materials, and foundation drawings.
  • Interpret geotechnical reports and extract necessary data for foundation design software including L-PILE and MFAD.
  • Ensure timely, on-budget delivery of design packages with high quality.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently and coordinate interfaces with other engineering disciplines.
  • Support the Project Engineer to achieve overall project goals and represent the project discipline to the client as needed.
  • Contribute to the development of the quality management system and fulfill reporting and project management requirements.
  • Support management in achieving organizational goals and perform additional duties as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 1 year of post-education experience, preferably in transmission line design for voltages up to 115 kV HVAC.
  • Knowledge of codes and standards including NESC, AISC, IEEE and ANSI.
  • Experience with finite element modeling in PLS-CADD, POLE, and TOWER; MFAD, HFAD, LPILE; AutoCAD; MicroStation; PSCAD experience is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety and harassment policies.
  • Ability to accommodate project-specific schedules that may extend beyond a typical workweek.
  • Client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy applies; random drug/alcohol tests may be required. A policy document will be provided during onboarding.
  • Role is contingent upon client approval of candidates.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site at client offices in Rochester, Buffalo, or Binghamton, NY.

Compensation

Salary range: USD 65,400 to 107,910 per year.
