Manufacturing Design Engineer II
Job Description
Onsite in Lebanon, KY, Portland Forge seeks a Manufacturing Design Engineer II to analyze, develop, and implement forging designs and tooling that enhance operation performance, production efficiency, and product quality while aligning with industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Design and refine production processes and workflows for both new and existing product lines.
- Create and deploy tooling, fixtures, and equipment to sustain efficient manufacturing.
- Collaborate with product design teams to ensure parts are manufacturable, applying DFM and DFA principles.
- Perform time studies, optimize line balance, and run process simulations to raise throughput.
- Assess and improve manufacturing methods to boost efficiency, reduce costs, preserve or enhance quality, and improve KPI performance.
- Identify root causes of production issues and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with maintenance and engineering teams to sustain and repair equipment and improve tooling effectiveness.
- Lead manufacturing projects, including new product introductions, tooling development, and equipment upgrades.
- Develop project plans with timelines and budgets, ensuring milestones are achieved.
- Monitor production metrics and implement quality control measures.
- Provide technical support to production teams for troubleshooting equipment and process issues.
- Create and update work instructions, standard operating procedures, and process documentation.
- Ensure safety and regulatory compliance with standards such as ISO and OSHA.
- Train production staff on new processes, tools, and technologies.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
- At least 3 years of manufacturing experience; forging experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with CAD software and manufacturing tools (examples include PTC Creo and Anvil).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems is advantageous.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Occasional exposure to high temperatures in a manufacturing setting.
- Ability to stand, kneel, or crouch as needed.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium forgings.
- Solid understanding of metallurgical and engineering principles.
- Familiarity with non-destructive testing methods (e.g., ultrasonic, penetrant inspection).
- Proficiency with computer-based documentation and reporting tools.
Work Environment
- Industrial or manufacturing setting with noise and varying temperatures.
- Occasional travel as required.
