Mechanical Design Engineer

As a Mechanical Design Engineer for a novel advanced reactor design effort, you will apply mechanical engineering expertise to solve design problems, define and evaluate systems, and support compliance with applicable codes and standards. The work includes electromechanical documentation, requirements decomposition using digital engineering tools, configuration management, and coordination across testing, fabrication, assembly, procurement, and experiment integration.

Key Responsibilities

• Apply engineering principles to resolve mechanical problems tied to reactor design activities.
• Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers on a novel advanced reactor design.
• Demonstrate effectiveness in system design and evaluation.
• Support project completion and implementation activities.
• Document the design of electromechanical devices, including controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions (for example, control rod/drum drive mechanisms) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
• Decompose project objectives into defined and controlled design requirements using a systems engineering approach, while tracking requirements and design parameters with digital engineering tools.
• Use best-practice design methodologies, technologies, and processes to develop, define, and validate designs against defined requirements.
• Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to maintain design features important to design functions.
• Oversee, or ensure oversight of, fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement activities in accordance with the design.
• Ensure assigned designs meet technical baseline requirements and applicable codes and regulations.
• Develop, ensure adequacy of, and maintain configuration management of the technical baseline, including assigned system configuration management.
• Maintain consistency across operational and technical documentation such as drawings, technical manuals, operating instructions, and emergency operating procedures.
• Partner with other designers, customers, and analysts to develop experiment requirements, complete conceptual and final designs, follow fabrication and inspection activities, lead experiment assembly activities, support installation and testing of experiments, and support integrated analyses to help meet facility safety bases.
• Support design and fabrication and related activities leading to reactor operations and experimentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Reactor Project Engineer or the Engineering Manager.

Required Qualifications

• Experience supporting reactor vessels, high-temperature gaskets, sealing systems, and bolting.
• Proficiency designing systems to relevant national consensus codes and standards, including ASME B31 series and BPVC.
• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for producing precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to design and production of goods and services.
• Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce logical answers.
• Ability to combine information to form general rules or conclusions, including identifying relationships among seemingly unrelated events.
• Ability to listen to and understand spoken information and ideas.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally so others will understand.
• Ability to recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.
• Education requirement: a degree from an ABET accredited program.
• US Citizenship required to perform this contract.

Education

A Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related field (ABET accredited) or a Master of Science.

Experience

Minimum 6 years of relevant experience.
