Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer, Data Center Engineering role at Amazon Web Services (AWS) focuses on the design, evaluation, and standardization of cooling-related mechanical systems for global data centers. This onsite position is based in Herndon, Virginia, and requires collaboration with internal and external teams to advance energy efficiency while maintaining high uptime.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement energy-efficient mechanical systems for data centers
  • Collaborate with teams to develop innovative cooling solutions and sustainability initiatives
  • Leverage BIM and Revit experience to support design processes
  • Create comprehensive documentation for mechanical designs and operational procedures
  • Support continuous improvement through data analysis and system optimization
  • Guide project teams through planning, execution, and commissioning phases
  • Conceptualize, initiate, and lead projects with broad impact on infrastructure design and implementation
  • Break down complex problems into clear, actionable solutions
  • Collaborate with professionals from diverse disciplines, cultures, and locations
  • Communicate effectively at appropriate levels of detail with varied technical backgrounds
  • Produce precise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, wiring schematics, diagrams, and reports
  • Understand and safeguard the Global Mechanical Basis of Design (BoD) with ongoing auditing
  • Drive standardization across data center mechanical designs
  • Develop strategic solutions that meet quality and budget requirements
  • Capture requirements and translate goals into well-defined, achievable, and testable specifications
  • Define project scope and provide technical support during innovation and R&D projects
  • Coordinate with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify suitable mechanical equipment
  • Review and approve critical equipment submittals including vendor witness tests
  • Provide technical support for global Large Scale Events, including deep dives and mitigation recommendations
  • Maintain and host technical mechanical forums to foster collaboration on data center systems
  • Offer mentorship and support across the Data Center Engineering community
  • Contribute creative, out-of-the-box solutions to engineering challenges

Requirements

  • Minimum 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Additional experience in industrial or commercial engineering for mission-critical facilities such as data centers, power generation, or oil and gas
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, REVIT, BIM 360, etc.
  • 6+ years of design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience
