Power Systems Engineer - Entry Level
Job Description
Patterson & Dewar Engineers is seeking an entry-level Power Systems Engineer to support electrical power system analysis for commercial, industrial, government, and institutional facility projects. This role focuses on performing technical studies, building power system models, and producing clear engineering documentation to support safety, reliability, and code compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out power systems studies in SKM for industrial, commercial, government, and institutional facilities.
- Perform studies that may include short-circuit analysis, electrical equipment evaluation, overcurrent protective device coordination, arc-flash hazard analysis, load flow analysis, motor starting studies, and harmonic analysis.
- Develop and maintain the power distribution system model database within the assigned scope of work.
- Complete calculations, analyses, and evaluations required by each project’s technical requirements.
- Prepare written study reports documenting system analysis, methodology, calculation results, and their significance to system operation, including an executive summary and action items when applicable.
- Support data collection, field verification, and documentation of electrical distribution systems.
- Follow established quality-control procedures and applicable electrical safety requirements.
- Manage assigned tasks to support project schedules and budgets.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Coursework or academic experience in power systems, electrical machines, protection, or power distribution.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, along with technical writing skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and other standard office applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to organize technical information and maintain attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.
Helpful Skills and Experience (Preferred)
- Internship, co-op, laboratory, or academic project experience involving electrical power systems.
- Experience using power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or EasyPower.
- Familiarity with short-circuit, protective device coordination, and arc-flash study concepts.
- Familiarity with NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and applicable electrical codes and standards.
- Engineer-in-Training certification or plans to take the Fundamentals of Engineering examination.
- Experience reviewing electrical equipment specifications and protective device data.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
