Principal Data Engineer - Global Cybersecurity Data & Analytics

Liberty Mutual’s Global Cybersecurity Data and Analytics team is building data engineering and analytics capabilities that strengthen cybersecurity insight and improve decision-making. In this onsite role in Plano, TX, you will serve as a principal technical leader, shaping complex data architecture, governance, pipelines, and visualization solutions that help teams understand patterns, trends, and correlations across large-scale data.

This Principal Data Engineer position focuses on end-to-end delivery, from ingestion and transformation to interactive reporting, with a responsibility to use AI tools effectively and responsibly, including validation of AI outputs and protection of confidential and customer data.

Key responsibilities

• Consult on the design and development of complex programs and tools for ingesting, curating, and provisioning enterprise data for analytics, reporting, and data science.
• Build and design data architecture that improves accessibility, efficiency, governance, and data quality.
• Collect, clean, and transform traditional and big data to support accurate and accessible datasets.
• Recommend improvements to data practices and drive those recommendations forward.
• Develop strong depth of knowledge in technology enablers and contribute to solution development for key business outcomes.
• Document existing processes, organizational structures, architectures, and external systems.
• Create interactive and visually engaging data visualizations to surface patterns, trends, and correlations in large datasets.
• Advise on Power BI visualization capabilities and functionalities.
• Present to and educate a broad audience on how to use visualizations.
• Actively use AI tools to increase speed, quality, and scale of work by identifying concrete value-add workflows, critically evaluating and validating AI-generated output, and applying AI responsibly to safeguard confidential and customer data.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience (technical degree preferred).
• Generally, 8+ years of professional experience.
• In-depth knowledge of IT concepts, strategies, and methodologies.
• In-depth knowledge of diverse and emerging technologies, including new architectural concepts and principles.
• Strong knowledge of data engineering languages and tools, with proficiency in new and emerging technologies.
• In-depth understanding of layered solution designs, shared data engineering concepts, product features, and security-minded approaches.
• In-depth knowledge of business operations, objectives, and strategies, including global business and technology trends in the financial services industry.
• Highly developed negotiation, consensus-building, and influencing skills, with facilitation and adaptability to respond to change.
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including strong presentation abilities.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
• Solid Python (Pandas) and SQL skills with analytical and critical thinking, including understanding of big data technology.
• Understanding of machine learning principles, statistics, and algorithms.
• Understanding of data warehouse solutions, data modeling, and governance.
• Working knowledge of AWS, Azure, and GCP cloud environments.
• Power BI development experience including DAX and M query, plus Power BI gateway knowledge.
• Snowflake administration experience.
• AWS Airflow experience.
• History working with ETL (extract, transfer and load) and data pipeline technology.
• Proven experience in data modeling, governance, and analytics.
• Ability to leverage and build APIs, along with Python and SQL query and data management knowledge.
