Product Design Engineer

Legacy Manufacturing is seeking an experienced Product Design Engineer to advance the design, development, and refinement of products from concept through production at our Marion, Iowa site. This onsite role focuses on creating 3-D CAD models and engineering drawings, maintaining thorough documentation, and ensuring product compliance throughout the lifecycle. Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end product design from concept to launch.
• Develop 3-D CAD models and drawings in SolidWorks.
• Translate market and customer requirements into measurable specifications.
• Apply tolerance analysis, FEA, DFM/DFA, and FMEA to craft cost-efficient designs that meet specs.
• Verify external components meet internal standards.
• Create testing procedures for products and components.
• Conduct tests and document results.
• Investigate failures to determine root causes.
• Collaborate with domestic and international factories and suppliers to ready products for manufacture.
• Support cross-functional projects with engineering documentation and testing.
• Partner with marketing, sales, production, and QA teams.
• Perform patent searches and assess opportunities for new protections.
• Drive continuous improvement and cost-reduction efforts on existing lines.
• Serve as technical liaison to external test labs and certification bodies.
• Act as the engineering compliance contact with internal and external partners.
• Guide on compliance requirements and best practices.
• Evaluate and approve supplier compliance documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum five years of experience in product development and mechanical design for industrial or consumer products.
• Proven experience with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
• Hands-on rapid prototyping experience with varied techniques and materials.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a creative approach.
• Experience working with domestic and international factories and suppliers.
• Experience creating and following engineering procedures, reports, and Declarations of Conformity.
• Working knowledge of ISO 9001 document control and change management.
• Familiarity with product safety and regulatory standards (UL, ANSI, ASTM, CSA, CE, PFAS, RoHS, REACH, Prop 65) preferred.
• Ability to interpret standards and translate them into practical design requirements.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
• Ability to thrive in a cross-functional team environment.
• Project management experience is a plus.
• Highly motivated self-starter.
