Senior Agentic AI Engineer II - Global Infrastructure

American Express is seeking a Senior Agentic AI Engineer II to join Enterprise Technology Services in New York, NY, supporting a hybrid working model. In this role, you will lead the creation of advanced AI and NLP capabilities, turning business objectives into scalable machine learning solutions while keeping systems compliant and production-ready.

As part of the engineering organization, you will help build and optimize AI/ML frameworks, improve Big Data pipelines, and support team growth through hands-on technical leadership. The position focuses on modern AI architectures, including agentic workflows and large language model systems, with an emphasis on real-world deployment.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of advanced AI and machine learning frameworks, including innovative natural language processing models.
• Translate complex business requirements into scalable AI/ML solutions.
• Optimize Big Data pipelines while ensuring compliance.
• Foster growth of individuals on the team through technical leadership and collaboration.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, and/or comparable experience.
• Advanced degree preferred.
• Knowledge of Python and data processing technologies such as Big Data (including Hadoop and Spark).
• Knowledge of natural language processing techniques such as fuzzy wuzzy and models including BERT and Transformer models, including real-world applications.
• Deep expertise in machine learning, including tradeoffs in model selection, evaluation, and optimization.
• Expert-level understanding of modern AI architectures, including LLM systems, agentic workflows, retrieval strategies, and scalable orchestration patterns.
• Experience in software development focused on machine learning, generative AI, Big Data, and prompt engineering.
• Experience working with large language models (LLMs), particularly GPT-3.5/4 or similar.
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, Java, or C++.
• Experience deploying AI models and pipelines using machine learning operations tools.
• Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment pipelines and containerized deployments.
• Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and ETL (extract, transform, load) processes.
• Extensive experience architecting and deploying large-scale AI systems in production environments.
• Experience leading development of distributed AI platforms, real-time inference systems, and cloud-native AI services.
• Advanced expertise in a technical domain with moderate expertise across several domains.
• Employment eligibility to work in the United States with American Express is required, as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.

Compensation: USD 123,000 - 215,250 per year.
