Senior Data Engineer

Nucor Business Technology (NBT) is hiring a full-time Senior Data Engineer to build and evolve a secure, scalable, and reliable data platform. This onsite role in Waterloo, IN, United States gives you the opportunity to shape lakehouse patterns, set engineering standards, and lead technical direction that supports trustworthy analytics across Nucor divisions.

Responsibilities

• Advance the Lakehouse pattern by defining layer boundaries, establishing what belongs where, and clarifying how domains relate, along with setting the transformation and orchestration standards other engineers follow.
• Provide technical leadership through mentorship, design reviews for pipelines and transformations, and expert problem resolution when complex issues arise.
• Own the monitoring and observability standard so failures and defects surface early for fast action.
• Partner with Database Administrators, IT, and Nucor business divisions (including NBG) on connectivity, network security, and data access policy. Build relationships with data and technology leaders across Nucor divisions and represent NBT in enterprise forums and communities of practice.
• Lead the data platform and engineering tooling roadmap by prioritizing legacy platform migrations, establishing migration and cutover standards, guiding decisions to migrate, rebuild, or retire capabilities, and advising BI teams and application leadership on platform initiatives.
• Treat data accuracy, reliability, and platform availability as safety-critical responsibilities by proactively identifying and escalating risks related to data quality, stability, and access control.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of experience in data engineering, business intelligence architecture, or enterprise data platform roles.
• 5+ years in a senior-level technical role (e.g., senior engineer, architect, or similar) with mentorship, coaching, or technical guidance responsibilities.
• Demonstrated experience architecting and operating an enterprise data warehouse or cloud data platform (examples: Azure Synapse, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric) used as a source of truth for reporting and analytics.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future. NBT is unable to provide sponsorship for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on Databricks development for initiatives (including Python-based data engineering work) and/or hands-on Microsoft Fabric work (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Notebooks).
• Experience designing dimensional/star-schema models and semantic layers for business reporting, including gold-layer design within a medallion/lakehouse pattern.
• Working knowledge of Azure data services: Data Lake Storage Gen2 and Key Vault.
• Experience with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code for data engineering artifacts (Azure DevOps; ARM/Bicep or Terraform).
• Experience mentoring engineers, building career/skills rubrics, and setting technical standards for a team.
• Hands-on experience optimizing Power BI / Fabric capacity, cost, and performance.
• Experience integrating and consolidating data across multiple ERP systems.
• Experience with Master Data Management, data governance, and customer/product identity resolution.
• Experience in manufacturing, industrial, or similarly operations-driven sectors.
