Job Description

The Senior Data Engineer, Underwriting Technical Lead at Travelers drives growth and modernization of the analytics landscape. You will guide team members' development and create data solutions that translate complex information into accessible terms, supporting AI, ML, and business intelligence initiatives. This onsite role is based in Hartford, CT, with a salary range of USD 139,400 - 230,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operationalize complex data solutions, address issues, apply data transformations, and recommend data cleansing and quality improvements.
  • Design intricate data solutions, incorporating new data sources and ensuring consistency across projects in alignment with data strategies.
  • Analyze diverse data sources to determine value and applicability, and advise on data to include in analytical processes.
  • Integrate core data management practices including data governance, data security, and data quality.
  • Serve as a data and technology subject matter expert within lines of business to support delivery and educate end users on data products and the analytic environment.
  • Perform data and system analysis, assessment, and resolution for high complexity defects and incidents, applying appropriate corrections.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to support delivery and educate end users on complex data products and analytic environments.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field or equivalent.
  • Ten years of related experience.
  • Proven expertise designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines on AWS, with hands on experience with S3, Glue, Redshift, Lambda, and/or EMR.
  • Proficiency in Databricks, including development and optimization of data workflows and leveraging Lakehouse architecture for large scale data processing.
  • Solid understanding of AI/ML concepts, with ability to collaborate with data science teams and support deployment or operation of machine learning models within the data ecosystem.
  • Hands on experience with dbt for data modeling, transformation, and documentation, applying strong software engineering practices to analytics workflows.
  • Advanced proficiency in PySpark for distributed data processing, capable of writing production grade code for large scale batch and streaming workloads.
  • Candidates from an Azure environment (Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks) will be considered if they demonstrate the ability to operate effectively within an AWS based stack.
  • Willingness to serve in a technical leadership capacity, including mentoring engineers, driving architectural decisions, and partnering with stakeholders across engineering and the business.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related STEM field, or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  • Six additional years of data engineering experience.
