Job Description

Senior Fiber Optic Module Packaging Engineer position based in Sunnyvale, CA, onsite at Coherent Corp.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop multi-fiber module packaging for fiber optic devices and modules, covering enclosure, fiber mounting, connections, and sealing.
  • Perform packaging design simulations and analyses to meet operating conditions, including vibration, shock, and environmental testing.
  • Select materials considering thermal stability, mechanical strength, and thermal expansion; identify vendors for components.
  • Develop specifications that satisfy performance requirements while achieving cost targets.
  • Create manufacturing fixtures and inspection processes; conduct reliability and qualification testing to verify module performance and reliability.
  • Release designs to manufacturing and lead the transfer of designs to production.
  • Provide ongoing technical support and failure analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in telecommunications, optomechanical engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of related experience.
  • Familiar with telecom fibers, cables, connectors, epoxies, and sealing mechanisms.
  • Ability to work independently on mechanical designs using SolidWorks and other software.
  • Capacity to work with minimal supervision and manage assigned tasks and projects effectively.
  • Strong ability to read, learn, and analyze complex materials and processes; search for solutions and develop innovative approaches.
  • Resourceful problem-solver who applies knowledge and experience to develop solutions.
  • Proactive in locating and collaborating with external suppliers to engage additional capabilities for project tasks.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and projects concurrently.
  • Willingness and ability to mentor and train colleagues within the work group.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and email; capable of developing tools or simple applications using these tools.

Safety Requirements

  • Attend scheduled trainings and follow site EHS procedures and Corporate EHS standards.
  • Use proper PPE as required by the job responsibilities.
  • Management ensures safety and environmental procedures are followed, risk assessments are performed, training and work instructions are provided, required PPE is available, and compliance is monitored.

Quality and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Depending on location, may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
