Job Description

This Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer role focuses on design, modification, and analysis of I&C systems for both new and existing nuclear plants. You will lead projects, guide engineers, and collaborate with vendors and clients to deliver robust, cost-effective solutions. A BS or MS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited) and at least five years of I&C design experience are required.

AI and Automation at Sargent & Lundy

  • Lead engineering teams in solving problems from issue to solution by leveraging data and modern tools, including automation and AI, to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Guide automation and process-improvement efforts, such as automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation, while ensuring outputs are checked.
  • Supervise engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate tasks, with review of automated outputs.
  • Encourage ongoing learning in related fields like Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Software Engineering to enable effective oversight of AI-enabled engineering workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design and assess PLC, DCS, touchscreen interfaces, network infrastructure, and other control systems.
  • Develop functional requirements and procurement specifications for control system deployments.
  • Apply mechatronics and control strategies to pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors to enhance plant performance.
  • Conduct critical digital asset cyber assessments and reviews.
  • Lead client meetings and site walkdowns to validate scope and ensure satisfaction.
  • Support the project manager to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Prepare and review detailed calculations for digital and analog control applications, including scaling and uncertainty analyses.
  • Interface with vendors for document reviews and to prepare equipment purchase specifications.
  • Produce clear reports and studies that meet client requirements.
  • Perform independent reviews of others' design documentation, calculations, and drawings.
  • Engage with professional communities of practice to advance expertise and knowledge sharing.
  • Provide mentorship to less experienced engineers and guide problem-solving with data-driven methods and modern tools.
  • Lead automation and process-improvement initiatives, including guidance on when and how to use AI-enabled tools, with results checked by others.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Five or more years of experience in I&C Design Engineering
  • Experience with equipment selection, control philosophy development, and assembling design packages, calculations, and specifications
  • Proven experience in controls system design for turbines, pumps, feedwater controls, and data displays
  • Experience serving as a client liaison in a support or lead engineering role
  • Experience reviewing design documentation
  • PE license is preferred
  • No sponsorship for U.S. work authorization
