Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer
Job Description
Join Hatch's Pittsburgh-based electrical team as a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer, bringing extensive expertise to design and deliver instrumentation and control solutions for capital projects of all sizes. This onsite role focuses on industrial process control, automation, and computer-based systems, guiding projects from concept through commissioning with rigor and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Role Details
- Location: Pittsburgh, PA (onsite)
- Salary: USD 165,000 per year
- Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
- Experience: Minimum 10 years
Responsibilities
- Draft and review instrumentation and controls deliverables, including design criteria, control philosophy, narratives, instrument index, I/O lists, calculations, data sheets, specifications, selection and sizing, P&ID drawings, system architecture, instrument location drawings, and installation details.
- Lead the production of scope-of-work documentation and engineering/construction work packages, performing quality checks and ensuring compliance with standards and internal procedures; review contractor and vendor drawings, material requisitions, and bid tabulations; provide construction support, commissioning, and startup assistance.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering with a strong interest in industrial process control, automation, and computer systems.
- At least ten years of experience designing industrial instrumentation and control systems for heavy industrial projects.
- Familiarity with current statutory regulations, industry standards, and recommended practices, with practical application experience.
- Experience with DCS and PLC control system hardware and architecture.
- Knowledge of SIS hardware and architecture.
- Strong planning and execution capabilities to meet quality, cost, and schedule targets.
- Experience with plant site instrumentation, control systems, control valves, and communications.
- Practical instrumentation system reliability, maintenance, and repair standards.
- Understanding of electrical hazardous area classifications and equipment specifications for plant sites.
- Experience with electrical and instrumentation fittings and interfaces.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality programs and procedures.
- Technical strength paired with interpersonal skills.
- Proficient PC skills and professional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation (InTools, Intergraph).
- Experience with Plantspace PID (Intelligent P&ID's, Bentley, Microstation).
- Experience with 3D modeling (Bentley).
- Experience with Relational Databases (administration & coordination).
- Experience with digital communications, fieldbus technologies, networking and hardware.
