Senior Java Software Engineer / Scrum Master

The Senior Java Software Engineer / Scrum Master role at Leidos supports next-generation flight service and air traffic systems within a highly regulated, safety-critical setting. The position blends approximately equal parts hands-on Java microservices development and Scrum Master responsibilities for an Agile team.

Role Overview

This role requires delivering production-quality, cloud-native services in Java while also leading Agile execution. You will contribute to software architecture and technical design decisions, facilitate Agile ceremonies, and support predictable sprint outcomes through continuous improvement practices.

Core Responsibilities

• Hands-on engineering (approximately 50%): Design, develop, test, review, debug, deploy, and maintain cloud-native Java microservices. Contribute to software architecture and technical design decisions.
• Scrum Master duties (approximately 50%): Facilitate Agile ceremonies, remove impediments, promote continuous improvement, and support the team in delivering consistent sprint results.
• Apply modern DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, AI-assisted development tools, and engineering best practices to produce secure, high-quality software.
• Coordinate with the Release Train Engineer, management, and cross-functional stakeholders to communicate team status, risks, dependencies, and delivery progress.
• Support deployment activities and operational troubleshooting, including resolution of critical issues across development, test, and production environments.
• Mentor junior engineers and foster collaboration across engineering teams to support successful sprint execution and project delivery.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with 8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with 6+ years of prior experience. A Doctorate may also be considered.
• 5+ years designing, developing, testing, and reviewing Java applications.
• 2+ years serving as a Scrum Master on a SAFe Agile team within a large-scale software development environment.
• Extensive web development experience and commonly used front-end tools and languages: React, HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
• Experience with unit testing tools including JUnit and Mockito.
• Experience with RESTful APIs, JSON, XML, and XSD.
• Significant experience with Spring Framework, Spring Security, and Spring Boot.
• Significant experience with Linux.
• Experience with version control systems such as Git or Subversion.
• Experience with common development tools and IDEs, including Eclipse and VS Code.
• Understanding of sound software development principles and practices.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain SF-85 Public Trust (Tier 2) suitability determination.
• US citizenship required.

Compensation

Pay Range: USD 107,900 - 195,050 per year.
