Senior Traffic Engineer
Job Description
Senior Traffic Engineer position based onsite in Richmond, VA, focused on leading traffic design and management efforts, safety analyses, and staff mentorship.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with traffic engineering analysis or design teams on assigned projects.
- Lead the design and delivery of projects involving traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, roadway and parking lot lighting, work zone traffic control, and ITS devices.
- Perform traffic safety and operations studies to inform recommendations.
- Develop or apply models using Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, and VISUM.
- Manage a range of assignments from small intersection improvements to complex interchanges and corridor projects, including innovative multimodal plans and parking studies.
- Conduct quality control reviews to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards.
- Support marketing and business development efforts to grow client relationships and project opportunities.
- Mentor and develop junior staff, contributing to team capability and growth.
- Position may require on-site work at client locations as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.
- Minimum of 16 years of progressive experience in traffic engineering.
- Fundamental understanding of macro, meso, and micro traffic modeling concepts.
- Hands-on experience with VISSIM, VISUM, HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic, CORSIM, and Quickzone.
- Proven experience designing traffic control devices including signals, signing, maintenance of traffic, pavement markings, ITS devices, and lighting.
- Familiarity with AASHTO, MUTCD, the Highway Capacity Manual, and the Highway Safety Manual.
- Professional Engineer license in Virginia or the ability to obtain via comity from another state.
- PTOE certification is preferred.
- Experience working on PennDOT projects is required.
- Proficiency with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Exceptional communication, technical writing, and organizational skills.
- Positive attitude and demonstrated willingness to work cooperatively with others.
