Job Description

Senior Traffic Engineer position based onsite in Richmond, VA, focused on leading traffic design and management efforts, safety analyses, and staff mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with traffic engineering analysis or design teams on assigned projects.
  • Lead the design and delivery of projects involving traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, roadway and parking lot lighting, work zone traffic control, and ITS devices.
  • Perform traffic safety and operations studies to inform recommendations.
  • Develop or apply models using Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, and VISUM.
  • Manage a range of assignments from small intersection improvements to complex interchanges and corridor projects, including innovative multimodal plans and parking studies.
  • Conduct quality control reviews to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards.
  • Support marketing and business development efforts to grow client relationships and project opportunities.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff, contributing to team capability and growth.
  • Position may require on-site work at client locations as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.
  • Minimum of 16 years of progressive experience in traffic engineering.
  • Fundamental understanding of macro, meso, and micro traffic modeling concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with VISSIM, VISUM, HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic, CORSIM, and Quickzone.
  • Proven experience designing traffic control devices including signals, signing, maintenance of traffic, pavement markings, ITS devices, and lighting.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO, MUTCD, the Highway Capacity Manual, and the Highway Safety Manual.
  • Professional Engineer license in Virginia or the ability to obtain via comity from another state.
  • PTOE certification is preferred.
  • Experience working on PennDOT projects is required.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Exceptional communication, technical writing, and organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude and demonstrated willingness to work cooperatively with others.
