Job Description

Apple’s Reliability organization is looking for an Applied AI Software Engineer to help build AI/ML applications at cloud-scale. In this onsite role in San Diego, you’ll implement GenAI-oriented tools and platform capabilities that support reliable deployment and execution across multi-tenant Kubernetes environments.

You’ll work across the full project lifecycle, partnering with engineering stakeholders and external contractors to deliver production-ready systems with observability, automated workflows, and inference pipelines.

What you’ll do

  • Build robust, full-stack GenAI-oriented applications using modern engineering practices, including a Python/FastAPI backend and a React/Next.js TypeScript frontend.
  • Develop and deploy services using AWS RDS and ElastiCache, with containerized workloads on AWS EKS using Helm and Terraform.
  • Extend and maintain a multi-tenant EKS platform that enables users to build, deploy, and run applications in Kubernetes pods at 5,000+ pod scale, including integrated build pipelines, sidecars, and a session-affinity reverse proxy.
  • Design and integrate GenAI features into the platform, including agentic workflows, AI agent skills, LLM-powered web features, and production-grade inference pipelines.
  • Own engineering project scope from concept through deployment.
  • Collaborate with a team of external contractors, providing code reviews and delivery support to maintain fast, high-quality output.
  • Implement and operate production observability using OpenTelemetry tracing, Prometheus metrics, and structured logging to support reliability and performance.

Required experience

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or related field.
  • Software engineering exposure through internships, including a strong foundation in CS fundamentals (data structures and algorithms) and experience building web applications using Python (FastAPI, SQLAlchemy) and TypeScript (React/Next.js).
  • Experience with containerized services on Kubernetes (EKS, Helm, Terraform).
  • Exposure to applied AI Engineering, building production-level solutions using GenAI and ML to meet business needs and improve organizational or development workflows.
  • Ability to follow direction from an engineering lead on feature scope, collaborate with stakeholders, refine requirements, and drive work toward completion.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
