Software Engineer (Hybrid)

Enlighten is building and deploying big data solutions for customers, and this hybrid role supports the design, development, and delivery of complex capabilities using modern Java. The position is based in Fort Meade, MD with in-person time on customer site, and it includes the requirement to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance after hiring (citizenship required).

Role Overview

This Software Engineer position focuses on implementing Java-based software capabilities, applying strong testing and troubleshooting practices, and keeping current with emerging software development trends. Work is performed in a fast-paced, small business environment alongside a talented team, with additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Develop Java-based software capabilities with strong working knowledge and hands-on experience.
• Bring an inquisitive approach, responsiveness, and excellent testing skills to day-to-day engineering.
• Demonstrate troubleshooting strength and the ability to operate under pressure while managing multiple deadlines.
• Stay current on emerging trends and technologies in software development.
• Integrate Next-Gen Coding Agents into routine engineering work, including proven experience with Claude Code or Google Antigravity/Gemini agentic workflows.
• Use autonomous agents for agentic feature and test development, including multi-file feature implementations, complex codebase refactoring, and automated generation of unit/integration tests.
• Manage context and workflows across complex, multi-repository application architectures, including critical auditing of agent-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Work in a hybrid environment with additional duties assigned as needed.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship required; must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance, not required on day one.
• Experience criteria: 5+ years software engineering with modern Java frameworks and libraries (for example, Spring and Guava) plus a bachelor’s in a related field, or 3 years relevant experience with a master’s in a related field, or a high school diploma or equivalent with 9 years relevant experience.
• Experience designing enterprise APIs.
• Experience with RESTful web services.
• Experience with microservices architecture.
• Experience applying Object Oriented Programming (OOP) paradigms.
• Experience across the agile software lifecycle.
• Ability to learn quickly and work effectively independently and as part of a team.
• Experience with the Linux operating system.
• Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven.
• Hybrid schedule flexibility: average of 1–2 days per week on customer site in Fort Meade, MD, with additional visits to headquarters in Columbia, MD. Schedule changes require adaptability.

Preferred Requirements

• Active Secret clearance is a strong plus.
• Proven daily use of AI tools such as Claude Code and Gemini.
• Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file delivery, refactoring, and automated testing.
• Experience with cloud technologies including AWS and Azure.
• Experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, and full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, and Solr.
• Scripting experience is a huge plus.
• Prior familiarity with Data Lakes or Warehouses is a huge plus.
• Understanding of agile software development methodologies and use of standard tool suites (for example, JIRA, Confluence, and GitHub Enterprise).

Anticipated salary range: $111,662.00 to $150,000.00. Hybrid work is designed to support both in-person collaboration and flexibility to work from home when needed. #LI-DS1 (Mid-Senior Level).
