Software Engineer III

Compensation: USD 90,000 - 180,000 per year. Location: Bentonville, AR (onsite).

What you’ll do

As a Software Engineer III, you will lead the design and development of scalable software solutions through cross-functional collaboration, including teams across product management and user experience. You will troubleshoot complex production and business issues using root cause analysis, implement sustainable fixes, and improve application performance through telemetry and monitoring.

This role spans the delivery lifecycle, from requirements through coding, testing, and deployment. You will ensure solutions align with quality, security, and scalability standards, while creating and executing test cases, supporting defect analysis, and contributing to continuous integration and deployment processes.

In addition, you will provide technical guidance to small engineering teams by sharing documentation and timelines to support successful delivery. You will also support ongoing problem management and operational readiness to strengthen incident resolution and SLA adherence.

How the team works

The team acts as the primary technical liaison between Level 1 Support and Core Engineering (Level 3). The focus is on improving turnaround times for support queries that require engineering input, reducing unplanned work, and operating globally across markets including the US, international regions, and Sam’s Club. Emphasis is placed on clear ownership, defined SLAs, and outcome-based metrics aligned with Walmart’s operational excellence standards.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product, project, business, and user experience teams to define high-level design and technical solutions.
• Develop, test, and maintain code aligned with business and technical requirements, including security and scalability standards.
• Troubleshoot production and business issues through root cause analysis and coordinated action plans.
• Lead small engineering teams with guidance, documentation, and timelines to support delivery.
• Create and execute test cases, perform defect analysis, and support continuous integration and deployment.
• Monitor application performance, implement telemetry, and drive improvements for sustained reliability and efficiency.

Requirements

• Proven expertise in object-oriented programming and software design principles.
• Strong technical acumen with experience in platform design, API development, and component services.
• Proficiency with iterative and incremental development methodologies and continuous integration/deployment practices.
• Ability to perform root cause analysis and troubleshoot complex production issues effectively.
• Experience with coding standards, debugging, and documentation-based coding practices.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies, including generative artificial intelligence.
• Demonstrated capability delivering scoped features and managing small to large-sized projects.
• Skilled in developing automated scripts and implementing telemetry for application monitoring.
• Essential: Expertise in Java, Big Data related technologies such as Spark, and working knowledge of GCP or Azure, plus Kafka.

Minimum qualifications

• Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area, and 2 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
• Option 2: 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Preferred qualifications

• Master’s degree (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area).
• Background creating inclusive digital experiences, including knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards and assistive technologies, with accessibility integrated into product development.
• Knowledge of accessibility best practices aligned with Walmart accessibility standards and guidelines supporting an inclusive culture.
• Masters: Computer Science

Good to have

• Frontend skills such as React.js and similar.
• Familiarity with Elastic, solr, and Vector DB.
