Job Description

In this Software Engineer role within Lam Research’s Global Products Group, you will design, develop, troubleshoot, and debug software programs that support Lam’s etch and deposition products. The work centers on practical GenAI/LLM applications, including observability pipelines, with close collaboration across business and engineering teams to keep AI systems aligned to business objectives.

This position is based in Fremont, CA with a hybrid work model, supporting time on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location while allowing flexibility for remote work.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and optimize AI prompts and next-generation applications powered by Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Develop application and component strategies covering both user experience and backend systems.
  • Build comprehensive GenAI observability pipelines to capture trace-level data, prompt inputs and outputs, and model latency.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including business leaders, engineers, architects, and designers, to align AI systems with business objectives.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and issue resolution during testing and in production environments.
  • Document technical architecture, methodologies, and innovations to support knowledge transfer and ongoing improvement.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews, provide guidance on enhancements and issue resolution, and ensure adherence to engineering standards.

What you bring

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electronics, or a related field plus 2+ years of industry experience.
  • A strong backend engineering foundation, including experience designing services, data models, and asynchronous processing systems.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience building prototypes or production applications using generative AI.
  • Hands-on experience with vector databases such as FAISS, Milvus, or Weaviate, and caching systems such as Redis or Memcache.
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), including indexing, chunking, embeddings, and reranking, along with context engineering focused on reliability, cost, and latency optimization.
  • Strong agent design skills, including prompt engineering, tool use, multi-step workflows such as ReAct, and failure handling.
  • Ability to translate complex technical ideas into scalable architecture, plus a drive to turn cutting-edge AI into high-impact solutions.

Technologies you will work with

  • Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines
  • GenAI observability pipelines
  • Vector databases: FAISS, Milvus, Weaviate
  • Redis, Memcache
  • Retrieval-augmented generation: indexing, chunking, embeddings, reranking
  • ReAct

Group and impact

  • Join the Global Products Group focused on the design and engineering of Lam’s etch and deposition products.
  • Contribute to innovation that supports solutions to major semiconductor industry challenges.
  • Design and debug software programs and develop tools that support design, infrastructure, and technology platforms, influencing hardware compatibility and integration between software and hardware.

Work location model

  • On-site Flex: 3+ days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with remote work for the rest of the week.
  • Virtual Flex: 1-2 days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with remote work for the remainder of the time.

Compensation
