Software Engineer, UI/UX
Job Description
The Software Engineer, UI/UX role at BurnBot, Inc. focuses on operator-facing software for mission planning, live supervision, mapping, alerts, and fleet tooling. You will build production front-end experiences and validate them with operators during live burn conditions.
Operator-Facing Software
- Develop the operator interface, including live telemetry, video, machine state, and controls that remain legible under real field pressure.
Mission Planning and Mapping
- Build mission planning and mapping workflows, including drawing treatment boundaries, setting plans, and reviewing what was actually treated.
Alarms and Alerts
- Design alarms and alerts to clarify what interrupts an operator, how prominently it is communicated, and what actions the interface requests in response.
UX Ownership and Design Work
- Lead the UX work directly, including research with crews, sketching, and delivering the built experience.
Design System
- Create and maintain a design system to keep tools consistent as the fleet and the team expand.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years building production front-end software with strong TypeScript and React (or equivalent).
- Experience working with real-time and streaming data in the browser, such as telemetry, video, or live machine state.
- Mapping and geospatial UI experience using tools such as Mapbox, Leaflet, deck.gl, or similar.
- Strong design sense, with the ability to translate vague needs into usable interfaces.
- Testing discipline, given the operational context where the software runs next to fire.
- Willingness to spend time with operators in the field and observe interface behavior under real conditions.

Compensation and Location
- Location: South San Francisco, CA (onsite)
- Salary: USD 115,000 - 170,000 per year

How the Team Works
- Based onsite in South San Francisco, with design, build, and testing conducted in one building and proximity to machines prioritized.
- Calendar flexibility: work hours can be adjusted based on focus, with the option to go remote on heads-down days.
- Field time: a few days per month across California, Oregon, and Washington to observe the interface running on live burns.
