Sr. Principal Module Design Engineer
Job Description
Coherent Corp. designs advanced fiber optic components and systems from its Fremont, California campus. The Senior Principal Module Design Engineer will own the design and development of fiber optic transceivers and CPO/NPO optical engine modules, guiding efforts from concept through production while coordinating across firmware, optical, mechanical, and process engineering teams.
Compensation
USD 127,875 - 223,813 per year
Responsibilities
- Design and develop fiber optic transceivers and CPO/NPO optical engines.
- Lead optical engine product design activities from initial concept through production.
- Co-design silicon photonics (PIC), electronics ICs (including TIA, drivers, and micro-controllers), substrates, optical connectors, and packaging to meet mechanical and thermal requirements.
- Perform analysis, modeling, simulation, and measurement of optical and electrical performance.
- Collaborate with firmware, optical, mechanical, and process engineering to deliver products that meet customer requirements.
- Apply in-depth electrical engineering insights to RF, power, noise, control, thermal, and EMI considerations.
- Prepare drawings, BOMs, and ECOs to document designs.
- Coordinate with program managers, buyers/planners, and suppliers to ensure parts availability for engineering and pilot builds.
- Resolve design-for-manufacturability issues raised by process/production engineering and component suppliers.
- Lead module design reviews across Architectural, EVT, and DVT phases.
Requirements
- Strong analog circuit design skills.
- Solid understanding of circuit theory, linear systems, feedback, ICs, and high-speed signaling.
- Proven laboratory measurement capabilities.
- Experience with the board-level design lifecycle.
- Proficiency with electronics CAD tools and electronic system modeling.
- RF design expertise using modeling tools such as CST or HFSS is a plus.
- Knowledge of microprocessors and real-time control firmware is a plus.
- Familiarity with fiber optic transceivers and CPO/NPO modules is a plus.
