Staff Software Engineer

Draeger Medical Systems, Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Andover, MA on a hybrid schedule to design, develop, and validate real-time clinical software systems. This role blends technical leadership with hands-on engineering to ensure reliable, regulatory-compliant software across complex healthcare workflows. The position carries a annual salary of USD 178,131.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, enhance, and maintain complex software components and subsystems that support clinical and healthcare software products, with expertise across C, C++, VC++/MFC/COM/ATL, C#.NET, Java, and Objective-C.
• Engage in full software development lifecycle activities, including requirements analysis, system and software design, implementation, build and deployment, verification and validation, release planning, risk analysis, and configuration management.
• Define and contribute to the architecture of real-time and distributed clinical software systems to ensure reliability, performance, and scalability.
• Implement and support healthcare system interoperability and secure data exchange between clinical systems in alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
• Develop, integrate, and validate secure communication mechanisms to protect clinical data exchanged across distributed healthcare and medical device environments, including TLS for unicast and custom secure protocols for multicast.
• Design, optimize, and automate clinical workflows across imaging, patient monitoring, and hospital systems to improve operational efficiency and clinical usability.
• Coordinate and lead software engineering activities by providing technical guidance, conducting design and code reviews, and mentoring engineers to ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
• Contribute to the development and validation of clinical software features while ensuring compliance with internal SOPs and FDA regulations and medical device software standards.
• Support audit trails, requirements traceability, post-market surveillance, and adherence to regulatory requirements.
• Drive modernization of existing software systems by improving architecture, maintainability, and scalability while preserving validated clinical workflows, including refactoring and migrating monolithic C++/C# codebases without disruption.
• Plan and execute software verification activities, including unit, subsystem, and integration testing, as well as defect reproduction, analysis, and resolution.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer and Information Technology or related field, plus five years of progressive post-degree experience.
• Experience performing software development in C, C++, VC++/MFC/COM/ATL, C#.NET, Java, and Objective-C.
• Experience with the full SDLC including requirements analysis, architecture, design, implementation, verification/validation, release planning, risk analysis, and configuration management.
• Experience in the design and architecture of real-time clinical systems, including deterministic systems, server applications, and distributed communication frameworks.
• Proficiency implementing healthcare system interoperability and secure data exchange using standards such as DICOM, HL7, IHE, and HIPAA-compliant protocols.
• Experience developing and integrating secure communication frameworks, including TLS for unicast and custom protocols for multicast.
• Ability to design and automate clinical workflows across imaging systems and the broader hospital device ecosystem.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams, providing architectural guidance, conducting code reviews, and coordinating cross-team efforts.
• Experience implementing image processing algorithms for ACR accreditation tests and ensuring FDA software and regulatory compliance related to 21 CFR Part 11, IEC 62304, and ISO 13485.
• Experience performing audit trails, traceability, post-market surveillance, and SOP compliance.
• Experience driving legacy system modernization, including refactoring and migrating monolithic C++/C# codebases without disrupting validated workflows.
• Proven ability to execute engineering and reliability verification through unit, subsystem, integration, stress/scale testing and detailed defect analysis.
