Job Description

QXO is building a new Takeoff team focused on AI-powered measurement and estimation for construction projects. As a Staff Software Engineer based in Seattle, WA (onsite), you will help take core measurement and forecasting capabilities from prototypes into production systems designed for scale, reliability, and measurable accuracy.

This role centers on owning the measurement engine and the productionization path for AI capabilities including LLMs, machine learning, and computer vision. You will architect and deliver systems that turn plans, drawings, aerial imagery, and 3D models into quantities that can be explained and validated, then use those results to forecast what it takes to build.

Responsibilities

  • Architect the measurement engine, designing and building systems to extract measurements from aerial imagery, plans, drawings, and 3D models and convert them into accurate, explainable quantities.
  • Build models that translate measurements into materials requirements, including quantities, waste, and complementary products, with improvement as actual orders and job outcomes are fed back into the system.
  • Put AI into production by taking LLM, machine learning, and computer vision capabilities from prototype to production, with clear accuracy targets, evaluation harnesses, and human review where needed.
  • Design services to support high-volume measurement and estimation requests with low latency, high reliability, and cost discipline, and make them available across web, mobile, internal tools, and partner platforms.
  • Expand the Takeoff platform across business lines, starting with roofing and extending to insulation, siding, waterproofing, decking, and beyond, enabling faster shipping for each new line.
  • Engineer AI-native workflows across the software lifecycle, using AI agents for design, code, testing, and operations, and developing tooling, patterns, and review practices to increase team speed without lowering standards.
  • Partner with product, UX, and sales engineering leaders and with takeoff experts to inform build, buy, and partner decisions through rigorous technical evaluation.
  • Raise the bar by mentoring engineers, leading design reviews, and setting standards for accuracy, quality, and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production software systems, including technical leadership for complex, cross-team projects.
  • Hands-on experience building and shipping AI and machine learning systems in production, including practical experience with LLMs.
  • Experience building high-scale measurement, estimation, or forecasting systems, including defining accuracy metrics and iterating on them over time.
  • Strong foundation in distributed systems, data pipelines, and service design for high-volume, low-latency workloads.
  • An AI-native engineering practice, including daily use of AI coding agents and tools and experience building evaluations, guardrails, or tooling around AI systems.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous problems into clear technical designs and explain tradeoffs in plain language to engineering and business partners.

Benefits

  • Annual performance bonus
  • Long term incentive (equity/stock)
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • PTO, company holidays, and parental leave
  • Paid Time Off/Paid Sick Leave: accrue 15 days of paid time off during the first year (4.62 hours for every 80 hours worked), with increased accruals after five years of service
  • Paid training and certifications
  • Legal assistance and identity protection
  • Pet insurance
  • Employee assistance program (EAP)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in construction technology, building products, estimating, or takeoff
  • Background in computer vision, photogrammetry, or aerial and geospatial imagery
  • Experience with computational geometry, CAD, or 3D modeling, and delivering those experiences across web and mobile clients
  • Experience with demand or quantity forecasting, probabilistic modeling, or time series methods
  • Experience as an early engineer on a new product or team in a high-growth environment
  • Advanced degree in computer science, machine learning, or a related field

Location: Seattle, WA (onsite)

Salary: USD 160,000 - 288,000 per year

Minimum Experience: 8 years
