Staff Software Engineer, Core Infrastructure
Job Description
Build the cloud-native shared infrastructure that other engineering teams rely on. This hybrid role in San Francisco, CA focuses on delivering durable frameworks and services, scaling them as Okta’s business grows, and helping maintain high engineering standards through strong reviews, testing, and operational excellence.
Compensation: USD 194,000 - 267,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Partner with engineering teams to design, develop, and deliver cloud-based infrastructure projects on a modern stack including Redis, Docker, and Terraform on AWS
- Lead evaluation, development, and rollout of new common features and frameworks
- Operate, support, and upgrade shared services and frameworks, scaling them as usage expands
- Perform design and code reviews while reinforcing quality through unit and functional tests
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues for services and frameworks the team owns
- Evaluate system performance and address bottlenecks
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers
- Collaborate with architects, QA, product owners, security, and operations engineers
Requirements
- Strong drive to do the right thing to help Okta’s technology stay ahead of anticipated growth
- Proven capability in architecting, implementing, tuning, and debugging large enterprise cloud deployments
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent (master’s preferred)
- 8+ years of expansive programming experience in an object-oriented language such as Java, especially backend services, with a strong understanding of multithreading, garbage collection, and memory management
- 3+ years working with MySQL or equivalent relational databases; designing databases and fine-tuning queries is a plus
- 3+ years building, operating, optimizing, and troubleshooting web services on Kubernetes (experience with AWS EKS is a plus, as is experience with GCP)
- Demonstrated experience with ReST fundamentals (knowledge of gRPC is a plus)
- Experience with Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, Tomcat, AWS, Redis, and Docker
- Knowledge of network security, authentication, and authorization
- Consistent adherence to best software engineering principles
- Experience with enterprise SaaS is a good-to-have
- Familiarity with an Agile software development process
