Structural Engineer
Job Description
The Structural Engineer position supports the creation of high-quality structural engineering design packages and provides on-site construction support in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Role Summary
In this role, you will contribute to structural engineering deliverables by preparing accurate design documents and supporting implementation during construction. The work includes collaboration on conceptual engineering outputs and routine walkdowns of existing facilities to support design development and provide on-site assistance to construction personnel.
Responsibilities
- Develop structural engineering design packages, including drawings, specifications, and calculations, and provide field support during construction to help ensure proper implementation.
- Collaborate with other structural engineers to produce conceptual engineering deliverables such as scopes/statements of work, design criteria, man-hour estimates, and bills of material.
- Perform walkdowns of existing facilities to support development of accurate design documents and to provide on-site support to construction teams.
Minimum Requirements
- Education and experience option: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program in the United States (EAC Accreditation Commission) or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, under the Washington Accord, or from ABET’s list of substantially equivalent programs, and 2 years of relevant experience.
- Alternative education paths: Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a Ph.D. in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- GPA requirement: Minimum GPA requirements up to 4 years post-graduation at the time of offer, confirmed by transcript:
- 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA for a Bachelor’s degree
- 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for a Master’s degree
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for a PhD
- Meet requirements of DOE O 426.2A, including either:
- Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major with 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience, or
- A DOE O 426.2A alternative pathway.
- Interim restrictions apply to newly hired personnel: duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities will not be assigned while meeting applicable DOE O 426.2A conditions.
- Security clearance: Requires a Q clearance; qualified candidates will be considered regardless of current clearance status, and you must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance.
- This position may require entry into Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which includes successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
- This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering License (PE) or ability to obtain a PE license after meeting required work experience
- Experience with structural design using STAAD.Pro and Tekla Tedds
- Experience with Microstation drafting software
- Experience with Revit drafting software
- Familiarity with consensus design codes and standards
