This onsite opportunity in Tempe, Arizona centers on designing and delivering robust power distribution for a hyper-scale data center campus, with emphasis on protection and automation control, turnkey project delivery, and close collaboration with vendors to create reliable, cost-effective solutions.
As a Systems Engineer, you will design and develop comprehensive power distribution systems for complex data center environments. The role emphasizes protection and automation, end-to-end turnkey project execution, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure dependable performance from a vendor ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Lead pre-construction design of complete power system protection and control, specifying overcurrent relays, transformer and bus differential relays, line differential protection, or PLC and RTAC for automatic transfer schemes.
- Create and refine site-wide Electrical Distribution Sequence of Operation to assure reliability and resiliency.
- Coordinate with utility providers, turbine power plants, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integrations, or combinations thereof.
- Specify, evaluate, and review vendor submittals and equipment to confirm alignment with system design requirements.
- Facilitate vendor coordination meetings to verify interoperable operation of all systems and equipment.
- Design and develop interlock systems across mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical domains.
- Collaborate with internal teams to specify relaying and instrument transformers for secure, dependable operation.
- Develop system wide automation using PLC or RTAC style controllers, including overload prevention, busway interlocks, load management, generator plant load curtailment, start and load controls with selective pickup and shed schemes.
- Design and implement relay protection and automation logic for SEL, ABB, Siemens or GE relays.
- Develop protection and control architectures such as IEC 61850, mirrored bit, protection interfaces, Modbus, and DNP.
- Provide power system failure analysis, sequence of events analysis, or develop metering/trigging systems to capture events for analysis.
Requirements
- Self-starting, eager learner with a drive to master new technologies and products.
- Strong understanding of power distribution, relaying, and automation systems.
- In-depth working knowledge of SEL devices (751, 787, 487E, 2411, 3350 RTAC), Siemens (7SX82/85, 7UT), ABB REF615, and related equipment.
- Extensive knowledge of electrical power system components such as emergency generators, transformers, switchgears, switchboards, automatic transfer switches, protective relays, UPS and DRUPS systems, motors, Static Transfer Switches, PDUs, BESS, inverters, PV systems, wind turbines, and substation equipment.
- Ability to understand power system studies and analyze time-current curves (TCCs).
- Strong results orientation and solid problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 8 years of engineering design experience in electrical power systems.
