American Transmission Co. is seeking a Substation Services Engineer to guide standards development and translate complex technical concepts into practical guidance across engineering, maintenance, commissioning, and construction activities. This onsite role in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, centers on keeping substations safe, cost-efficient, and reliable, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to advance asset performance.
The position offers a salary range of USD 119,500 - 139,400 per year and requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. A Bachelor’s degree in engineering is preferred, with other combinations of education and experience considered acceptable.
Responsibilities
- Champion standards excellence across substation design and documentation.
- Lead the development and updates of substation design standards, template drawings, specifications, guides, and technical aids; collect input, build consensus, and communicate revisions to improve consistency and clarity.
- Serve as a responsive resource for engineering, maintenance, commissioning, and construction teams; assist with problem solving and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
- Support asset performance by evaluating vendors and factory qualifications; collaborate with Asset Management and Supply Chain; back pilots that introduce new technologies and deliver long-term value.
- Promote continuous improvements by identifying process enhancements across engineering, procurement, and construction to raise quality, efficiency, and consistency.
- Provide stewardship and accountability for assigned assets by guiding their performance, condition, and lifecycle.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred; alternative education and experience combinations will be considered.
- Licensure: Wisconsin and/or Michigan professional engineer (PE) designation is beneficial but not required.
- Experience: 5+ years in substation design, equipment specification, or standards development; field, maintenance, commissioning, or construction support experience is a plus.
- Technical depth: Foundational knowledge in substation design areas such as grounding, equipment application, control house layouts, or constructability/maintainability; familiarity with major substation equipment (circuit breakers, disconnect switches, power transformers, instrument transformers, capacitors/reactors, and auxiliary systems). Depth in several areas is valuable.
- Standards savvy: Familiarity with IEEE, NESC, NERC standards and utility engineering practices; strong documentation, calculations, drafting review, and standardization skills.
- Professional strengths: Clear, structured communicator; collaborative team player; analytical, decisive, and field-aware; reliable and communicative with stakeholders.
