Transportation Engineer I or II

The Texas Department of Transportation, Paris District Headquarters, is looking for a Transportation Engineer I or II to contribute across planning, design, construction, and traffic operations. This role involves collaborating with districts, FHWA, contractors, and local stakeholders to advance transportation projects from development through execution. You will bring engineering insight to pavement design, traffic management, and project delivery in a hands-on, on-site environment.

Responsibilities

• Support contract oversight, issue work orders, and monitor construction timelines, payments to contractors, and overall project progress.
• Aid in preparing design and project development reports, surveys, and related correspondence.
• Coordinate preliminary design phases and PS&E revisions with districts, divisions, Administration, FHWA, contractors, fabricators, the Corps of Engineers, and local entities.
• Deliver presentations and represent TxDOT in appropriate forums.
• Conduct and document in-house research studies as needed.
• Carry out engineering design tasks including layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contract documents.
• Engage in planning activities such as plan reviews, calculations, and assisting with transportation planning studies.
• Assist in preparing reports on pavement conditions.
• Review and revise schematics, PS&E, project designs, shop drawings, and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution, roadway lighting, and traffic management systems.
• Review, process, and certify project design plans developed by consulting engineers.
• Prepare reports, specifications, and test procedures.
• Provide advisory input on administrative, technical, regulatory, and engineering aspects of transportation.
• Prepare design and project development documents, surveys, and related correspondence.
• Oversee construction project traffic control plans and periodically review traffic control devices with Area Engineers.
• Update and review requests for changes to plans, manuals, and standard sheets.
• Act as a consultant to staff engineers to coordinate construction operations.
• Assist with design, computer operations, and plan preparation.
• Conduct pre-construction meetings and public hearings.
• Develop or review engineering documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans.
• Monitor contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.
• Coordinate the review and processing of PS&E submissions, special specifications, or special provisions.
• Analyze statewide pavement conditions and prepare related reports.
• Perform pavement design work and provide recommendations.
• Provide design engineering support for districts during project development.
• Resolve differences between contractors and inspectors.
• Review construction operations related to project delivery and workflow.
• Review contracts, specifications, plans, and utility billing documents for right-of-way coordination.
• Review shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements, and change order requests.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science.
• Valid driver’s license, with the ability to operate a state vehicle.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
• If licensed in another state, obtain Texas PE within six months of hire and agree to that condition.
• Transportation Engineer I: 4 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience.
• Transportation Engineer II: 5 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related experience (time can be earned full-time or prorated part-time). Related graduate-level education may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes

Conditions of Employment

This position is considered physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical. A drug test is required prior to employment for safety impact positions and the role may be subject to random drug testing. The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation does not permit medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result.
