Job Description

Thermo Systems LLC is seeking a Control Systems Project Engineer I to support a wide range of control system initiatives in Sparks, NV. In this onsite role, you will own assigned project tasks end-to-end, while also providing technical engineering support for work led by others, taking direction from project leads, supervisors, and company leadership.

Role scope

Work on a variety of control system projects.
Lead individual project-related tasks and/or complete complicated large-scale projects.
Provide engineering support on projects/tasks led by other team members.
Assume ultimate responsibility for assigned projects and tasks.
Seek guidance from assigned project leads, supervisors, and company leadership as needed.
Operate in the field with full self-sufficiency.
Serve as the customer’s main contact on projects you lead (for small to mid-sized projects and individual task leadership).

Key responsibilities

Lead and assist with start-up and commissioning of control systems.
Lead and perform Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
Read and interpret piping & instrumentation diagrams and wiring diagrams.
Provide feedback comparing field conditions versus drawings.
Apply experience with Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) applications.
Demonstrate deep understanding of the company’s Quality Management System (QMS).
Provide review of standard documents generated by others for technical, grammatical, and aesthetic content.
Apply a firm understanding of complex control system design and provide instrumentation specifications for complex control systems.
Maintain a thorough understanding of Information Technology (IT) systems, network infrastructure, and computer system design as they relate to control system integration.
Communicate effectively, positively, and proactively with customers.
Follow customer-specific site standards and procedures, and conduct business professionally.
Provide excellent customer care and support, remaining patient, attentive, and responsive in problem-solving.
Follow up and honor commitments with customers; actively seek to service customer needs.
Complete assigned tasks accurately, on schedule, and under budget.
Understand assigned scope, identify when issues fall outside scope, and communicate those issues to the assigned project lead.
Anticipate possible issues and proactively plan solutions.
Seek opportunities for new work with customers and contractors.
Deliver detailed feedback on project and task assignments.
Demonstrate understanding of project contracts and specifications and the ability to identify and manage risks.
Where applicable, direct and oversee junior or subordinate staff members regarding construction, operations, and/or maintenance tasks at a project site.
Promote efficient resource use to complete project tasks and contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.

Minimum requirements

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or another pertinent curriculum combined with relevant technical experience.
Typically 4+ years total experience.
Proven track record: 2+ years as Lead Control Systems Engineer or equivalent.
Decision-making, relationship-building with customers, initiative to seek new responsibilities, and the ability to anticipate issues and use resources efficiently.
Typically requires overnight travel up to 50%.
On-call rotation participation may be required based on location and client needs.
Proof of eligibility to work in the country where the position is located is required.
Maintain a valid driver’s license.
Fit for Duty at all times.

Job Description

Silicon Valley Mechanical is seeking an HVAC Project Engineer to join the Sparks, Nevada team on site. In this role, you will drive design, scope development, estimating, and engineering for HVAC and plumbing projects, collaborating with design-build teams and vendors to resolve issues and advance project outcomes.

Responsibilities

Onboard to Silicon Valley Mechanical culture, mission, values, services, project history, and standard procedures within the first 30 days.
Familiarize yourself with the engineering file structure from design through closeout and learn the technology used, including BuildingConnected, FastPIPE, and FastDUCT.
Attend weekly BIM coordination meetings and project manager sync sessions; work with the PX/PM to visit job sites and establish rapport with field teams.
Shadow a PX/PM on multiple projects to understand the role and how to communicate effectively with general contractors to build strong connections.
Participate in kickoff meetings for new projects and Sunset wrap-up meetings, attend turnover discussions with the Engineering department, and debrief with PX or PM to capture learning.
Learn to schedule wrap-ups and assist in building tentative deadlines for final closeouts.
Shadow and assist on 2-3 projects under oversight, guiding kickoff calls with GCs and subcontractors as questions arise.
Learn financial tasks related to estimating, work-in-process, and change orders; collaborate with purchasing to drive PO payments and address outstanding balances with vendors.
Coordinate field tasks independently while checking in with the PX as needed and continually asking questions to deepen understanding.
Begin to own project management elements on 1-2 projects under the supervision of a PX/PM.
Around month 9, start learning the pre-construction process, negotiating pricing with vendors and GCs, and comparing proposals.
By month 12, achieve 100% proficiency and autonomous performance with an annual review with the PX.
During the 18-24 month window, become more involved in pre-construction and lead kickoff meetings for 2-3 projects with minimal oversight.
Develop questions about new designs, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), code implications, and expand knowledge of chillers and cooling systems.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Mechanical Engineering with HVAC design (preferred).
2+ years’ experience with a design/build mechanical contractor, project engineer, construction, or a similar role (highly preferred).
Knowledge of HVAC systems, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics (preferred).
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Bluebeam required.
Excellent oral and written business communication skills with a proven ability to actively listen.
Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and multitask.
Professional demeanor and commitment to high levels of customer service.
EIT certification and/or professional engineer (P.E.) is a plus.
