This onsite role supports AWS Data Center Global Services in the design and standardization of building management system and electrical power monitoring system controls for data centers. The position emphasizes standards development and cross-functional collaboration to optimize controls performance, with the work based in Seattle, WA.
Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain deep expertise in building operations, mechanical plant strategies, BMS/EPMS programming concepts, control diagrams, industrial HVAC systems, electrical lineups, one-line diagrams, and complex environmental and electrical concepts.
- Apply knowledge of data center redundancy, mechanical failure strategies, single point of failure analysis, energy and water conservation best practices, and data reporting analytics.
- Create, maintain, and disseminate specification documents and Basis of Design standards for global projects.
- Develop and maintain project specific scopes of work that incorporate global design standards.
- Drive innovation to support team initiatives and organizational goals.
- Serve as the central point of contact for multiple internal and external groups regarding BMS/EPMS controls standards.
- Lead and facilitate collaboration with construction teams, controls programmers, MEP/ACS engineers, Design Engineering, CRE, and project managers to achieve initiative goals.
- Coordinate with regional project managers to review and finalize project scopes of work.
- Manage and prioritize requests for information across new construction, existing facility support, and legacy site enhancement projects.
- Lead vendor selection processes, bid reviews, and RFI support and coordination.
- Evaluate and approve Modbus Device Templates for electrical meters and control devices.
- Review vendor submittals and technical documentation for compliance with AWS standards.
- Operate effectively in high-security, mission-critical environments while prioritizing safety and productivity.
- Interact with AWS cloud services and applications to present, archive, and analyze collected control system data.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support the global data center control system infrastructure.
- Anticipate roadblocks and risks, providing escalation management and resolution as needed.
- Travel globally as required to manage and support project initiatives.
- Collaborate through design reviews to drive consistent standards across delivery methods, including Leased, Owned, Build-to-Suit, and Colocation models.
- Collect feedback and lessons learned to produce unified, documented solutions.
- Support risk identification and mitigation efforts during site assessments and project lifecycles.
- Serve as controls subject matter experts with knowledge of building operations, electrical generation and distribution equipment, mechanical plant and strategies, BMS/EPMS programming concepts, and related diagrams and concepts.
- Create, maintain, and disseminate project-specific SOWs, specifications, drawings, and global design standards.
- Ensure systems are deployed and commissioned in alignment with documented standards.
- Exercise frugality through budgetary review and customer-focused interpretation of needs.
- Provide expertise as a technical SME in mechanical and/or electrical controls.
- Ahead of risk, anticipate roadblocks and manage escalation appropriately.
- Work independently to rapidly diagnose and resolve unforeseen challenges.
- Oversee external consultants to ensure high quality deliverables.
- Review vendor bid packages and offer informed selection recommendations.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently and coordinate with AWS cloud services to present, archive, and analyze data.
- Address problems to deliver results while juggling multiple tasks, including domestic and international travel as needed (approximately 25%).
Requirements
- 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission critical facilities, such as data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
- 4+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning experience for electrical and mechanical systems.
- Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Strong understanding of electrical diagrams, control diagrams, building operations, control circuits, and industrial HVAC systems.
