Job Description

Virginia Tech is hiring an Associate Data and Analytics Engineer to help power enterprise data, analytics, and reporting solutions in a hybrid work setting from Blacksburg, VA. In this role, you will support day-to-day platform operations and assist in building data pipelines and cloud-based analytics capabilities, working under guidance from senior professionals.

Role focus

  • Support enterprise data and analytics platforms by monitoring scheduled jobs, data pipelines, reports, dashboards, and related platform services.
  • Assist with troubleshooting data quality, integration, performance, and platform issues, escalating more complex items as needed.
  • Participate in incident response and operational activities, including monitoring, alerting, issue resolution, service restoration, and operational automation.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, testing, and monitoring of data pipelines, integrations, and ETL/ELT workflows for Snowflake-based analytics.
  • Help create and maintain enterprise data assets, data models, and transformations used for institutional reporting and analytics.
  • Develop SQL queries and scripts for data processing, reporting, analytics, validation, and operational needs.
  • Perform data validation, testing, reconciliation, and quality assurance to support accurate, complete, and reliable enterprise data.
  • Apply established standards for data governance, metadata, data quality, security, privacy, and access control.
  • Assist in building and maintaining dashboards, reports, visualizations, and self-service analytics using approved enterprise tools.
  • Collaborate with business and technical staff to understand reporting and analytics requirements, including report validation, user testing, and solution implementation.
  • Provide customer support and guidance for enterprise reporting and analytics services.
  • Support technical documentation, operational procedures, training materials, user adoption activities, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement efforts.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Business, Data Analytics, or related, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of data management, reporting, analytics, or business intelligence concepts.
  • Experience writing scripts, using version control (GIT), and working with the software development life cycle.
  • Experience developing SQL queries and working with relational databases.
  • Experience supporting software applications, data solutions, reporting systems, or analytics platforms through coursework, internships, student employment, or professional experience.
  • Ability to learn new technologies, business processes, and technical concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing business needs, and complete assigned responsibilities within established timelines.

Preferred qualifications

  • Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Snowflake or comparable technologies.

  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT, data modeling, data warehousing, or analytics engineering concepts.
  • Experience with reporting or BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, MicroStrategy, or similar platforms.
  • Experience gained through internships, assistantships, capstone projects, student employment, or professional work.
  • Familiarity with higher education data domains or enterprise administrative systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and data stewards while completing assigned work with appropriate guidance.

  • Location: Blacksburg, VA (hybrid)
  • Salary: USD 62,665 - 76,590 per yearly (salary information: $62,665 - $76,590)
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Appointment type: Regular
  • Overtime status: Exempt: not eligible for overtime
