Job Description

IDD Aerospace, part of the Safran Group, is seeking an Automation Engineer II to advance automation capabilities for manufacturing and testing operations in Redmond, Washington. The role centers on designing, building, and sustaining automation platforms while independently delivering defined automation projects under moderate supervision. This position collaborates closely with manufacturing, quality, and operations teams to enhance system reliability and efficiency on the production floor.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain automation systems used in manufacturing and testing, including robotic test platforms.
  • Diagnose faults across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software interfaces on automated equipment and drive corrective actions with manufacturing, quality, and operations teams.
  • Prototype and validate designs through iterative development using SolidWorks, FDM 3D printing, and low-volume/high-mix manufacturing methods.
  • Create service documentation such as setup procedures, calibration protocols, troubleshooting guides, and work instructions.
  • Monitor system health via the team’s monitoring platform and report on field performance trends.
  • Assess vendor components (sensors, actuators) and contribute to make-vs-buy decisions in collaboration with senior engineers and purchasing.
  • Conduct Gage R&R analyses and apply data-driven methods to improve equipment performance.
  • Collaborate across manufacturing, production, design, and quality to ensure design intent, calibration, and software support are properly documented.
  • Apply LEAN principles and pursue continuous improvements for automated systems.
  • Provide project updates and participate in PDR/CDR reviews with senior engineer support.
  • Adhere to all safety and company policies.
  • Research and recommend manufacturing and testing equipment as part of ongoing optimization efforts.
  • Develop ROI and cost-savings analyses for automation projects and present findings to management when requested.
  • Contribute to time standards, tooling, and processing requirements.
  • Manage multiple automation projects concurrently under moderate supervision.
  • Mentor interns and entry-level engineers on automation initiatives when opportunities arise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 3–6 years of professional experience in automation, manufacturing engineering, or robotics.
  • At least two years of experience with Python or C#.
  • Two years of experience with SolidWorks or an equivalent CAD tool.
  • Minimum one year of on-the-job experience in a manufacturing or production floor environment.
  • Experience programming automation or robotic platforms (ROS, ROS2, or equivalent).
  • Experience characterizing and evaluating electromechanical systems.
  • One year of experience with SQL or database querying is preferred.
  • U.S. Person status required under ITAR/EAR guidelines.

Working conditions

Approximately 50 percent of the time is spent at a computer, with the remainder on the manufacturing floor collaborating with automated equipment.

Physical requirements

Must be able to work in an analytical environment utilizing specialized knowledge. Occasional lifting of equipment components and extended time on the production floor may be required.

  • Contacts: Regular interactions with teammates across manufacturing engineering, production, quality, and operations; occasional vendor engagement; clear written and verbal communication is essential.
  • Responsibility: Moderate impact on productivity, material utilization, and profits. Works with moderate supervision, allowing for creativity and judgment within defined boundaries.

Degree of supervision

Operates under moderate supervision from the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, with technical guidance from senior engineers.
