Job Description

ATS Applied Tech Systems is seeking an experienced Lead Cooling Controls & Solutions Design Engineer to helm the design of data center mechanical cooling systems, controls architecture, and mission-critical infrastructure operations. This role traduzes mechanical intent and owner requirements into BAS/BMS, PLC, SCADA, and integration strategies.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will serve as the technical design authority for cooling control systems, guiding the translation of mechanical intent into robust automation architectures that support reliable data center performance and interoperability across multiple control platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Architect control system frameworks spanning BAS/BMS, PLC, and SCADA environments to support cohesive cooling operations.
  • Define input/output structures, panel requirements, controller selection, network topology, communication architecture, and integration strategies.
  • Ensure interoperability across BACnet, Modbus, OPC, EtherNet/IP, and related industrial protocols.
  • Produce and/or lead development of control drawings, network architecture diagrams, panel layouts, I/O lists, control schematics, instrumentation lists, points lists, BOMs, sequence documentation, and integration matrices.
  • Contribute to standards for repeatable data center control architectures, cooling system templates, engineering methods, FAT procedures, SAT procedures, and commissioning documentation.
  • Evaluate cooling system performance under normal operation, maintenance scenarios, partial-load conditions, failure modes, and integrated testing environments.
  • Identify gaps between mechanical design intent and controls execution before field issues arise.

Requirements

  • Experience designing, commissioning, troubleshooting, or operating control systems in BAS/BMS, PLC, or SCADA environments.
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Rockwell, Siemens PLC, or similar systems.
  • 8+ years of experience in data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial controls, or complex mechanical infrastructure environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical drawings, control schematics, sequences of operation, specifications, and commissioning scripts.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls engineering or a related field.
