Job Description

Van Ert Electric Company, Inc. is seeking a Controls Engineer to lead the controls and automation efforts for industrial projects from design through commissioning. This role collaborates with cross-functional project teams to develop robust control systems, coordinate with clients and vendors, and ensure safe, efficient delivery on schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Design control panels and electrical systems for industrial processes.
  • Develop I/O lists, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and bills of material.
  • Create network diagrams and support the development of construction packages and specifications.
  • Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, and related automation equipment.
  • Provide application engineering support for sensing, control systems, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams on project design and execution.
  • Coordinate with clients, equipment vendors, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Support field commissioning, start-up activities, and system testing.
  • Perform modifications and improvements to new and existing electrical installations and power systems.
  • Provide technical recommendations, support, and solutions across departments.
  • Manage project priorities to meet schedules, budgets, and customer expectations.
  • Deliver responsive customer support through phone, email, and onsite assistance.
  • Communicate project updates, challenges, and solutions with project management teams.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or an Associate degree with 5+ years of relevant controls engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, industrial controls, and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC hardware, software, and configuration.
  • Experience with FactoryTalk SE/ME programming.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of project workflows, including design, estimating, procurement, coordination, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Oracle, SQL, or other database platforms.
  • Understanding of NEC and UL508A standards.
  • Experience programming Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Knowledge of servo control systems.
  • Server setup, deployment, and administration experience.
  • Network design, implementation, and industrial managed switch programming experience.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and industrial automation platforms.
  • AutoCAD experience.
  • Working knowledge of one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, communication networks, control panel design, and bill of materials development.
