Job Description
Van Ert Electric Company, Inc. is seeking a Controls Engineer to lead the controls and automation efforts for industrial projects from design through commissioning. This role collaborates with cross-functional project teams to develop robust control systems, coordinate with clients and vendors, and ensure safe, efficient delivery on schedule.
Responsibilities
- Design control panels and electrical systems for industrial processes.
- Develop I/O lists, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and bills of material.
- Create network diagrams and support the development of construction packages and specifications.
- Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, and related automation equipment.
- Provide application engineering support for sensing, control systems, and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams on project design and execution.
- Coordinate with clients, equipment vendors, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Support field commissioning, start-up activities, and system testing.
- Perform modifications and improvements to new and existing electrical installations and power systems.
- Provide technical recommendations, support, and solutions across departments.
- Manage project priorities to meet schedules, budgets, and customer expectations.
- Deliver responsive customer support through phone, email, and onsite assistance.
- Communicate project updates, challenges, and solutions with project management teams.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or an Associate degree with 5+ years of relevant controls engineering experience.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, industrial controls, and networking fundamentals.
- Experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC hardware, software, and configuration.
- Experience with FactoryTalk SE/ME programming.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of project workflows, including design, estimating, procurement, coordination, construction support, and commissioning.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

- Understanding of NEC and UL508A standards.
- Experience programming Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
- Knowledge of servo control systems.
- Server setup, deployment, and administration experience.
- Network design, implementation, and industrial managed switch programming experience.
- Experience with SCADA systems and industrial automation platforms.
- AutoCAD experience.
- Working knowledge of one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, communication networks, control panel design, and bill of materials development.
