Data Engineer
Job Description
GroundWork Renewables, Inc. is expanding its data capabilities to ensure laboratory measurement data is reliable and readily accessible to the lab, engineering, and operations teams. This on-site role in Albuquerque, NM offers a pathway to shape the internal data infrastructure that underpins measurement, environmental sensing, and operations analytics. The position carries a salary range of USD 90,000 to 100,000 per year and requires a Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain relational and time-series databases for lab instrument data, environmental measurements, and operational records.
- Develop and manage ETL and ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and store data from IoT sensors, measurement hardware, and remote sensing platforms.
- Build and deploy internal data access tools and applications using modern frameworks such as Streamlit, FastAPI, and React to enable lab staff to query, visualize, and analyze data.
- Develop QA and QC protocols to validate incoming data in line with regulatory standards like ISO 17025, implementing automated checks, anomaly detection, and audit trails while maintaining defensible data records and traceability.
- Architect and optimize database schemas for performance and scalability, evaluating SQL, NoSQL, and time-series technologies based on data needs and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with lab engineers, metrology staff, and operations to translate data access needs into technical solutions and serve as the primary contact for internal data availability and reporting.
- Design and build internal data access tools, dashboards, and reporting interfaces using full-stack frameworks such as React, FastAPI, Streamlit, and Plotly Dash, leveraging AI-assisted development environments to accelerate delivery while maintaining security and governance.
- Maintain data governance and documentation, including data dictionaries, schema documentation, and data lineage, aligned with laboratory quality management systems; contribute to SOPs and data management plans.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in data engineering, database engineering, ETL/ELT development, or related field.
- Experience designing and operating production data pipelines and infrastructure.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, data science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or similar); familiarity with time-series or NoSQL databases is a plus.
- Proficiency in Python (pandas, SQLAlchemy, FastAPI, or similar) for data engineering and backend development.
- Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT pipelines and workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow, Dagster, Prefect), including scheduling and monitoring.
- Experience building web applications or dashboards using tools such as Streamlit, Dash, FastAPI, React, or AI-assisted development environments; ability to deliver functional tools rapidly using AI-assisted workflows.
- Experience implementing QA/QC workflows for instrument or sensor data, including anomaly detection, validation rules, and audit logging; familiarity withISO 17025, GLP, or similar regulatory frameworks is a strong plus.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical data concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD practices, and cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP); Docker experience is a plus.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools to write, debug, and refactor code; able to evaluate AI outputs for correctness and security in a regulated environment.
- Understanding of laboratory informatics concepts and data management in accredited or regulated settings.
